Strengths: Plays with a mean streak, shows above-average upper body strength and flashes a violent punch. Uses hands well and can shed blocks quickly. Keeps head up, locates the ball carrier quickly and athletic enough to slide off the block in time to make the tackle. Takes sound pursuit angles, plays with a good motor and shows better range as a run defender than 40-time suggests. Has adequate initial quickness for size and is a relentless pass rusher. Has active hands and flashes an effective rip move when shoots inside. Wraps up upon contact and is a reliable open field tackler that flashes the ability to deliver the big hit. Plays with emotion and is a fierce competitor.

Weaknesses: Excellent knee bend in stance but stands up coming out of it, lacks prototypical size and gets driven back at times. Doesn't protect legs and easily knocked to the ground by cut blockers. Lacks ideal lower body strength and isn't a powerful bull rusher that can consistently collapse the pocket. While quick, doesn't always see the snap and can be a step late getting off the ball as a result. Lacks closing speed and is frequently step late getting to the quarterback. Doesn't show great awareness as a pass rusher and frequently fails to get hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback. Flies upfield and is has some problems recognizing draws and screens. Missed two games with a leg injury in 2006, missed bulk of 2007 spring practices rehabbing shoulder and durability is a concern.

Overall: Dotson arrived at Arizona in 2003 and redshirted his first year. In his first three seasons (2004-'06), he appeared in 28 games (20 starts) and amassed 71 tackles (5.5 for losses), four sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups. As a senior in 2007, he started all 12 games and finished the season with 50 tackles (nine for losses), 6.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Dotson sat out much of spring practice in 2007 while recovering from a shoulder injury. He also missed some time in 2006 because of a leg injury. His uncle, Vance Bedford, played football at the University of Texas and for the St. Louis Cardinals. Dotson lacks prototypical size for an interior run stuffer and he doesn't show great instincts when rushing the passer but he has the frame to bulk up, there's a lot to like about the way he uses his hands and he's high-motor player. Keeping all of that in mind, he projects as a late fifth round or early sixth round pick.

By Clark Judge on Sportsline:

Sleeper
Lionel Dotson, Arizona. He may project more to a defensive end in a 3-4, but he has the quickness and experience you want in a defensive lineman. At 6-4, he has the size, too, but he could be more consistent. He's probably a fifth-round pick waiting to happen, but he could make an impact if he lands at the right spot.

Thanks for the insight.

Is he going to put on weight or is this another DE? I would have preferred Mario Urrutia

i was hoping for RED BRYANT from a&m but this guy is oretty good.

i live in AZ and the die hards here are real big on him.

better than another rb though, thats for sure!!

looks like we can say bye-bye to solie and some of those dt's
that the last regime brought in [but never did diddly].

Who's catching the ball this year and who will be covering Welker and Moss?

If I was Roth I would be on the treadmill right now trying to lose about 20 some odd pound minimum . . . because he wont make this team unless its at OLB
HAHA. We have tons of D-linemen on this roster now, so I think you are right. We need pass rushers.
