Yet another reason to thank Spielman

well on the positive side he is not here to do these things anymore..
i think this is howards last year here... i think we will aquire another cb by draft or free agencey and with will poole comin back next year i dont know if howard will be kept at his salary.

J.James is ok,but Howard needs improvement,I think he's a good sub guy like Saban said, not starter material.

How in the world does he get another NFL related job at espn?
Adding him to their roster along with steak boy just boggles the mind.

how we paid almost 22 million for howard is beyond me... we need to cut him to save further money. If we're going to dish out that kind of money, lets at least get a GOOD cb who is worth the dough.

8 CB's signed for higher money that season. Free Agency is never cheap. There is no such thing as not overpaying those first few weeks.

Howards contract isn't even 'that' bad.

$4.25 million signing bonus

2004 535000.00
2005 1000000.00
2006 2000000.00

That's basically 3 years at $7.8 million. Not a very huge overpay. Remember CB's flew off with huge deals that entire offseason. Also the guard we were looking at signed with Detroit at a $9 million signing bonus and James was pretty dang close in talent level.

...not talking about James - only Howard. Regardless of what other players went for in the DB position, Howard was seriously overpayed.

Don't forget that they hired Joe Theisman also... :shakeno:

Only the last part was about James. The salary was about Howard. He's got a contract for an 'average' starter. He doesn't have a 'huge' contract.

He just proved you wrong

Overpaying for free agents is a byproduct of drafting poorly for so many years. Its a vicious cycle which can only be reversed by drafting well for a few years.

No, he didn't. Reggie Howard is overpaid and has yet to live up to the money he is being paid. He is about to be replaced by a rookie drafted in the 4th round, who is earning his keep.

Didnt Wanny still have controll at that point. I know the Gm would have done a lot of the work on that but it was still up to Dave. Or am I Wrong?

I don't believe so. Spielman had been named GM and thought that just because Howard and James played for a Super Bowl team, they must be super players. Jeno James is an ok starter, but Reggie Howard is not.

i'm speaking relative to his performance, not relative to the position.

again, howard has not earned his contract, nor has he played up to snuff.
I don't care if that contract is "average" for DB's... Howard would not be starting anywhere else right now - he benefits from how thin we are at DB. I understand he WAS the starter in Carolina in '03, however with the level of his performance now, he surely would have been replaced or benched by now. We play him out of necessity obviously.

Dol-Fan Dupree - don't comment if you don't have anything constructive to add. He didn't prove me wrong - he did not understand what i said. period. I am sure, however, that he is gracious that you are around to "back him up". Van is capable of presenting his arguments and making his own comments. He doesn't need cronies. But thanks for playing.
