Buzzer giving Dolphins QBs fits at training camp

My comments: Last season, Beck did a lot of things right. One thing he was bad at though, was the dink-and-dunk. When you start a rookie qb... you better believe the other team is going to blitz... and he better be able to prove that he can get rid of the ball consistantly and effectively in 3 seconds or less.

The buzzer seems like an effective tool to help teach this rule... It's sink or swim time for Beck... either this fixes him.... or he's a third-stringer.

How is a 3 second clock going to help a guy who already is prone to hit the safety route??? If anything it'll compund the problem by making him into a 1 read and dump QB. Beck needs to be able to look off DB's and progress through his reads. This timer is 1 thing more for him to worry about, instead of what he sould be..Coverages, scheme, routes, etc.. It's going to seriously backfire IMO

I don't have any problem with dink and dunk, quick slants, a quick release, or whatever anybody wants to label that type of offense. Seemed to work pretty well back in the day for Bill Walsh, Joe Montana and the 49ers - and more recently for Brady and the Patriots. However, as AZS pointed out, it does seem to be counter productive to have a QB not go through his progressions - and look for his last resort, the check down to the RB first. Is this because they have no confidence in the ability of the offensive line to block?

I think the point of this is to instill an "internal clock" in these QB's...to understand that they have to make a decision and make it quickly...

It doesn't matter at this particular point whether it's the CORRECT decision or not...just make a decision and go with it...don't be indecisive...that's where the mistakes come from.

Learning how to go through progressions and make the CORRECT decision is a little further down the road...

I hope they teach them to get rid of the ball at that 3 second mark...but also, what about the times when there isnt any rush or the OLine does an amazing job at blocking. If the QB doesnt see an open receiver after that "internal" clock expires...does he feel compelled to throw it away? Or break the clock and wait for seperation.

That's why I'm iffy about this thing.

I just hope that when Beck throws the football this year, that the ball is going forward and not five feet straight up in the air.

They have to fix Beck's ability to get rid of the ball and not get so rattled under heavy pressure. He took a beating last year in the pocket in the limited times he threw the ball, in fact had Cam let him throw it more we may have damn near killed him. That is partly his fault, they do need to work on that clock in his head.

This is an interesting point. The one thing that used to annoy me most about Brady and the New England offense was how many of their drives consisted of 3 to 5 yard passes. As you can see, he has progressed into a much more dangerous passer on deep routes and I don't think it's just because of Moss.

Of course, it helps if you know what the opposing defense is going to do.

The only way to get Beck to improve vastly is to push him hard. This is what they're doing.

Imo the great QB's have this internal clock naturally. They seem to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em and they understand and know the nfl will be fast and independently start making the adjustments and push themselves on their own based on their own competitive nature and drive to be the best. Is the fact that our guys lack these attributes and knowledge a sign that they have limited potential?

That's the thing. If he's constanly able to beat the blitz, they will stop blitzing as much & try to cover better. A QB who can get rid of the ball fairly quick can keep the "D" somewhat honest. Ofcourse, you need help of your TB out of the backfield & your WR's to get open, but this can only help a QB.

Go Fins!

I have to agree with you for once :)

If I were Beck I would walk over to whoever is ringing that buzzer and knock them out.
The buzzer is doing more damage than good with the QB's. Im sure the first thing that comes to mind at the line is getting rid of the ball before the buzzer goes off. That is the last thing they should have to worry about.
The ball needs to come out before they get sacked whether that is 3 sec or 10 sec. Plus the buzzer isnt teaching them how to avoid pressure in the pocket.

It can really help witht the decision making... especially if you think QB's are playing tentative... They CANNOT BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES.

I had a coach who did this with us... And his reasons for doing it was to get you to throw BEFORE the WR was open...It taught you to stop WAITING for him to create seperation since then the pressure can come as well as help from the safeties... It also teaches you not to lock onto one as you need to check down MUCH quicker... For what it's worth it helped IMMENSELY... As we could even beat tight coverage with timing patterns... And it really helped to build chemistry with the receivers when they knew that as soon as they made the cut the ball was on the way. Also they learned very quickly that if the Qb's were throwing to a 'spot' and they were not there when it arrived that it was their fault... It called them out a little bit.

The thinking was... If the ball is already downfield at 3 seconds there is no pressure.
