A Little used defensive scheme in the NFL is the 3-3-5. There is good reason for this because it is very vulnerable to the running game. But, in my estimation, this is the best way to defend against the Saints. We already run a 3-man front, I think you either take Ayodele or Crowder out and bring in Culver or Clemons as the 5th DB.

In this scheme the we would play a Cover 3 with the CBs playing the deep outside zones and a FS playing the hole. We have underneath zones for the hook, curl and flat routes. These underneath zones extend to 15yds. beyond the LOS. Our defenders are going to have to read Brees' intention and break on the ball(easier said than done). Each defender is going to have to have more than one zone responsibility depending on the reads he gets from the WRs.

S(playing Strong-Side Shallow): Strong Side Curl/Flat routes
SOLB:Strong Side Hook/Curl routes
MLB: Deep Middle routes
WOLB: Weak Hook/Curl routes
S(playing Weak-Side Shallow): Weak Side Curl/Flat routes
Corners: Deep 1/3.
Free Safety: Hole.

We can run a variety of blitzes out of this bringing different defenders: Safeties or LBs. Of course when you blitz you have to have another defender cover his zone and let the FS account for any hole in the defense.

Is this the perfect answer for the Saints offensive attack? No, but it does give us the best chance against their scheme. And with the problems we have had from the Safeties in coverage, it gives us another DB. Another potential problem is asking the MLB to play the deep zone and I don't know if either Crowder or Ayodele can do that. But we do have deep help from the FS.

Just my two cents worth :D Don't cut too deep.

I dont think anyone will rip you to bad since your trying to take Crowder out the game actually I think people will love this!

I think we have to come with a lot of different looks and our defensive line is going to have to generate some pressure on their own

The Saints muster enough of a running game to compliment their ELITE passing game.

They already Ave 159 yards a game running, do this and they could get over 300.

The Saints are a passing team but they don't play with 4 or 5 WR alot, they like to only send a few guys on pass patterns a play so they can give their QB time to find the open guy.

If they played 4 WR's all the time this would be a good defensive scheme but they don't so if we used this we'd get killed.

imo we need to do the same thing we did against the colts run run and more run and then complete the 2 min drill and with henne i think we can. i know henne is not the qb penny is or was but he will throw the deep ball which automatically makes teams back up even with the wild cat. also he throws harder then penny so sideline throws have a better chance of being completed. defensively all we have to do is get pressure and force brees to throw quick

I agree with the post that says to do what we did with the Colts. We actually had a good game against the Colts but we didn't tackle and had mental errors. If we clean up the fundamentals and keep breeze on the bench, we will be ok.

This is exactly what the Bills tried to do -- dropping seven or eight into coverage and essentially ceding the Saints the run. The Saints recognized it and proceeded to run for 222 yards en route to scoring 27 points.

Now will the Dolphins do this? I highly doubt it. The entire mentality of this team -- from Parcells on down -- has been that you win by running the ball and stopping the run. That's the overwhelming first priority. From a philosophy standpoint the notion that you simply sit back and allow a team to gash your run defense so they can't beat you with the pass runs counter to everything they believe in, even if it might be effective against a team like the Saints.

In this day and age, when even Ben freakin' Roethlisberger can throw for 400 yards and nobody blinks an eye, that strategy might be a bit passe. But it's their strategy. Don't expect it to change.

The only problem is that the Saints are very efficient running the ball as well as passing.

Good call.

Good analysis. This post is bringing out the best in Miami fans. Great post, LoM.

In obvious passing situations we should use it. There run game isn't as big of a concern as I thought it'd be. We still have one of the best run defenses in the NFL.
