You Have Got To Be Kidding Me-AJC:Ryan vs Long

Jake Long is the only wish pick in the first round i ever got besides Dan Marino, (both months before the draft). Besides which, they turned out to be the correct picks. Too soon to tell the impact Long vs Ryan will be long-term.

Give me a break you all would love to having Matt Ryan right now, stop being such homers. Matt Ryan is was a rookie and had a great season, so of course he is only "above average" was Peyton Manning the best QB in the league his second year?

I like Jake Long, and he was the safe pick, I have no complaints. He was a great pickup for Miami. I'm not going to belittle Ryan though just because we didn't take him.

matt ryan would have sucked as a rookie dolphin

Would that have made Ryan any worse a player...or just that he would have had worse protection? He still would have been the same player...

This is the same excuse people use when they talk about Welker....

The team doesn't matter. It is the player that matters. If a team is not able to use a player to his full capabilities...it is the team's fault!!! Not the player's!!!

he wouldnt have been productive with our offense last year

The differance is Long is a dolphin/ If Ryan was a dolphin the arguement would be the reverse.

wondering if Atlanta's LT will be able to control JT and Joey. Atlanta fans wont be so giddy once they see him hitting the ground hard after getting a helmet to the ribs.

Let me say that suggesting Parcells would have been fired in his first year if he did not turn the team around immediately is sheer lunacy... Completely. Anyway... ignoring that glaring mistatement... I just don't think this is the simple question that everyone makes it out to be.

First of all it would have been a MUCH bigger issue if Pennington did not fall into our lap. Anyone remember the name McCown? He would have been the man. Need I say more?

Second... Unearthing a franchise QB is no easy task. If it was... maybe Blackledge would not have been picked ahead of Marino, Vick would have rewritten all the QB records in his first year or just maybe someone would have picked Brady in the 5 rounds before the Pats. Character... quite simply is one of the biggest requirements in a QB and is simply impossible to measure effectively.

The Dolphins made the right pick because it was the safest one. They were coming off an atrocious year prior and could not afford to gamble the first overall pick... At the time like it or not Ryan was the bigger gamble.

Next... Long will never be considered a 'bad' pick.

Lastly... Ryan had an outstanding rookie season and played with poise and confidence... though he did have the benefit of Michael Turner. The Falcons use Turner to set the table for Matty and not the other way round...

Look at the stats in their wins and losses and you will see that as Turner goes so do the Birds. This year will be the litmus test for Ryan... I think you are going to see teams concentrate on stopping Turner and put the ball in the hands of the sophmore... Beginning Sunday.

In closing let's admit this... If Chad Henne turns into anything then the Phins pick of Long is not just GOOD... It is unadulterated GENIOUS.

Whenever a team picks first it will always be questioned regarding any other pick in the draft that turns out "better" than the first pick chosen (see: Mario Williams and Reggie Bush). As Fish-Head said, it's not what we know now that makes the pick it's what we knew then. QBs in round 1 are not a sure thing, not even close (see: Couch, Tim; Smith, Akili, etc.). The Dolphins recent drafts have been horrendous, especially high round picks. A "stud" rookie QB is worthless if he is staring up at the sky too often (see: Carr, David). We needed to get better and you build a team from the lines out. The fact that the Trifecta started there tells me they have a clue. Jake Long was the sure thing, the pick we couldn't afford to fumble that we didn't. I also agree the discussion should not be Long vs. Ryan but Long-Henne vs. Ryan-Sam Baker. I'm not sure (nor will any of us until Henne gets a chance to play for real) whether we came out better in that comparison or not.

This is the best that that the AJC can come up with. No wonder why their paper is withering on the vine.

Most GMs knowing what they know now would take Ryan over Long right now. That's not a knock on Long but franchise QBs are hard to come by.

Jake Long is a Pro Bowler, Matt Ryan is an above average quarterback. End of story.

Brett favre was a pro bowler last year too.

Teams don't draft players for one season.
