All offseason the front office has talked about building the trenches and that seems like the most logical path for the #1 pick. But, anything is possible. Miami has a lot of holes and could go in a lot of different directions, especially if they trade up or down.
So, who is your surprise pick? Mine is with a trade-down option, maybe around the LA Chargers pick at #28. The Chargers could be in play for a quarterback if Lock or Jones is there. Both might be. I also think the corners start going toward the middle of round one. Maybe Pittsburgh could trade up for Murphy, who seems like a perfect fit for them.
My surprise: A.J. Brown
Honestly, I haven't thought much about wide receivers as I feel that is down on the pecking order. Miami is also "relatively" strong there with Wilson and Grant coming back and the surprise re-signing of Parker.
Then I started thinking about New England's success on offense which is build around dominating in the slot. The Patriots have accomplished that with a pin-point, accurate quarterback and small, quick receivers that are match-up nightmares. The Dolphins kind of did the same thing with Wilson and Grant, who both were playing well until they got injured. That's part of the problem with these smaller receivers as they get punished in the slot.
Brown is built like a linebacker at close to 230 pounds. He is Jarvis Landry with speed and someone who could absolutely be a beast in the slot and perhaps more durable than some of these smaller receivers. Plus, with 4.42 speed Brown gives a team more versatility. He isn't limited to the slot.
I don't think it will happen, but with a trade down Miami could cast a bigger net. Plus, with a new qb coming likely in 2020 building an offensive line and having a safety net receiver like Brown could add up to instant success.
