ok guys/gals. you are the gm of the miami dolphins.

you want keith butler as the finz new DC. what do YOU
do to make this happen? what do YOU offer? what package
do you think it would take to get it done, a contract that
cant refuse and walks out of the interview with a SIGNED
deal?

i have said in a few recent posts that to get a highly rated, sought
after coach, you have to come up with a BIG, cant turn it down
package. salary AND percs.

here is what i would do and close to what i think it will take to land
keith butler in miami.

if I am the gm............

1. i offer him a salary that is the best of the nfl DC's or at least
close to it with percs and escalators if his defenses are at the
top of the nfl each year.

2. i tag on the assistant head coach title to give the contract more
clout and its not just a DC gig.

3. i have mr ross, our resident billionare real estate mogul offer him
up a major discount on a high end estate and property deal in the
upper crust community of he and his wifes choosing.

4. he has FULL control over his defensive staff as long as he is with
the team. he approves ALL decisions on EVERY defensive draft pic
and free agent.

5. make him a WRITTEN promise that if tony sparano is vacated from the
HC position, he will get FIRST SHOT at the position as long as his defenses are performing and are in the tops of the nfl.

THIS REALLY is not a lot. not in todays nfl. we are not talking being a
corporate manager of a denny's chain. if you look at the fact that he
is the PERFECT guy for the job, that he is WIDELY considered one of
the top assistant coaches in the game and brings in a resume of top
of the nfl lb corps, superbowl wins, and schooled by one of the top 2
3-4 defense gurus in the history of the nfl, it just isnt anything overly
outlandish. not to mention the fact that other teams have been wanting
his services as DC and is on everyones short list. he has MANY suitors.

hey, this guy will be walking away from a promise of a dc gig with a team
he has built his career on. he will have to move his family, kids in new
schools. new community, new house, new climate, etc...

concidering all these factors, it WILL take a MAJOR package to land him in
miami. and ITS DESERVED!

SO, this i what I would do if i was the gm and i think the finz will be tossing in the wind if they dont offer something like this or VERY close to it. i wouldnt count out not involving him in a small ownership of the team.

hey, if gloria estefan and marc anthony and jimmy buffet can get minority
ownership, why not a new, exciting inovative young coach?

WHAT DO YOU DO to land butler if your the gm and WHY do you think
he deserves what you offer?

tell us that. dont critisize other guys deals. just tell us what and why
you would do it.

SAY NO 2 AL GROH!!!

1. Why would you offer him a salary as high as the highest of position coaches? He hasn't proven he can be a coordinator.

2. The NFL doesn't do the head coach in waiting thing or promise any assistant they get an interview.

3. NO way Ireland and Parcells would ever concede control of a draft pick to a position coach. Or would they seek anything more out of him other than his opinion.

I think he would be a great hire, but you shouldn't have to beg him to come. If he wants to advance his coaching career he will jump at the chance to do so in Miami.

Over him a entry level contract as a defensive co-ordinator, if he wants more for a job he has never done then good bye. He's a LB coach, he should jump all over this opportunity!!!

Let's not over react and pay the man for what you think he might due, he deserves a pay raise and an opportunity to show his abilities. If you want to build in incentives then fine but let's not go crazy here.

Does the name Jason Garrett ring a bell? He is the coach in waiting for the Cowboys if Wade cannot get things done. Forget the Rooney Rule...that's a total joke. Garrett gets a reported $3 million for waiting around, so offering Butler $1.5 million wouldn't be a slap in the face.

I GUESS THE PART ABOUT NOT BASHING others deal
got missed. it doesnt matter what other people think,
the thread isnt approve my gm deal for butler, its
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

CHRIS BOUCOM: any deal you make? anything other than critiquing
mine or guessing at what parcells would do?

whats your deal? how much? whats the offer.

what are the perc or incentives? [if any]

Rooney Rule is a joke, not disputing that. But why would you offer Butler anything more than a competitive salary to come down here. It just doesn't make sense. The guy should jump at the chance to be a co-ordinator, he's a position coach. Jerry Jones is an idiot and the fact that he pays Jason Garrett that kind of money proves that.

Ask the Seattle Seahawks how the whole head coach in waiting thing worked out.

ROMAN:

even though i agree with all you said [garrett was a great example],
what would YOU do?

what do you think you would have to offer to land him in miami?

Doesn't matter what you offer him if he doesn't want the job.

so ONCE AGAIN CHRIS...............

we know all abourt what you DONT like or what you
wouldnt do.

LETS SEE YOUR DEAL!! do you have one?

I would offer a 3-4 year deal with a competitive salary of other DC's around the league. I would not throw the moon at him...what if he's a terrible DC? Then your right back to square one and wasted a ton of money and time. And again, I would prefer him to Al Groh. I like Groh, but I want somebody fresh that has learned from someone else out there that runs a pretty damn good defense. And Dick LeBeau is as good as it gets.

GREAT STUFF TED!!

yes, nothing you could do if he doesnt want the job.

but the thread is about WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO LAND HIM HERE?

well ted? what would you offer as a gm?

As GM, I would ask my minority owner Fergie, to take one for the team and do whatcha gotta do. BADDA BING.BOOM BOOM

I agree with the sentiment of this post. If you think he's you're guy, be aggressive.

You did go a bit overboard, though.
