Hello, I was wondering what kind of player you guys think David Bowens is. I know my Jets are interested in signing him to presumably play OLB in the 3-4, and DE in the 4-3 alignment. The Jets are likely to have him on the field during passing downs if they do in fact sign him. His 18 sacks over the last 3 seasons indicate he is capable in that capacity. Your thoughts would be appreciated

David Bowens is a perfect situational pass rusher - he is very effective on third down, and he is a very good special teams player as well.

Hes really a very useful player. I hope we end up re-signing him.

Do you think he can be an every down player as an OLB in the 3-4? How is he as a run stopper?

Not an every down player, although during our 4-12 season I believe he started every game as a 4-3 end and had decent numbers.

Still, best suited as a situational guy.

David Bowens is a physically gifted player. However, in watching Dolphins games every week, I've noticed that he seems to make at least 1 boneheaded mistake per game. Usually some kind of penalty that will cost your team field position on special teams or maybe a roughing the passer on 3rd down.

All in all he's a good addition, but be ready for 1 boneheaded play per game.

Thanks for your opinions, I know in the excitement of probably landing David Carr this is probably not the juiciest topic

I think if you were to put him in that situation you would be very disappointed. He's a pretty good pass rusher and that's about it; with the emphasis on "pretty good". He's the kind of guy you count on playing STs and then throwing him out there on obvious passing downs to help bring the pressure. He's a Robert Mathis kind of guy-except a little slower.

I like him and think he's a very good player.

But I think we want to try and take a stab at a player at that position, a young player, that could be GREAT somewhere down the line...a Tim Crowder, or some such player.

And also, if he goes elsewhere, he has the potential to net Miami a really good compensatory pick.

Well, to me it's a pretty important topic simply because we've already lost several significant ST contributors and losing Bowens would only serve to further weaken the unit. Plus, again he's a reliable player within our pass rush schemes.

Thanx for the feedback, and I promise to root hard for you guys both times you play the Patsies, and maybe even the Bills

Bowens in a decent back up. He'll provide some pressure on the outside that the Jets need. However, dont be fooled by 18 sacks in 3 years, most of those came 3 years ago when he was the starting DE opposite JT. He's an underrated pass rusher though.

Don't listen to all these guys David Bowens is terrible. He's slow, stupid, lazy. The only reason he was on the team is because his father is a close personal friend of Huizenga and Wayne is very loyal. If you think Bowens would have registered any sacks without JT rushing the other side you're crazy.

So listen, he's not worth the money. Send him back over here to Miami where he belongs- with the rest of the scrubs.

Yeah he is a little injury prone...

He can rush the QB. Personally he's one of my favorite fins. He's smart, he speaks well & he makes plays on the field. He has a good sense of humor...
