Since everyone here has their own ideas about what the Dolphins need to do to fix the mess we're in, I figured we could have a little fun. In this thread, pretend you run the team...Say what you hope happens this offseason, whether it be in the draft, in Free Agency, with trades, with players we should let go, random musings, whatever you want.

This shouldn't really be a thread to argue and say "Matt Ryan stinks! John Beck stinks! We can't do that! We can't do this! Our Offense needs more work, our defense needs more work!"

Just chime in with what you think might happen or what you hope for. Since noone can tell the future and nothing really ever goes as we plan it, let's see what all the other fans are thinking. Heck, reading a lot of posts here over the years, you'd think half the members should have actually been running the team haha.

Anyways, I'm not really up on draft order, cap space, college player rankings, and so on....like a lot of you. Just an average Dolphins fan hoping for the best. So here's what I'm thinking:

In the draft, I wish we could trade out of the pick. It's so much money, and I think I could be one of the few who really, really wanted the Dallas trade to go down (I don't think it has a chance). I would have liked two first rounders and Barber. With our new OC, I think you really need a two back system where players can stay healthy and take a hit. I'm not really sure if Chatman and Ricky (current Ricky) will be up for the challenge. Add on that Ronnie might not come back the same, I'm not so sure how "deep" we actually are there. I was hoping some team would trade a late LATE pick for Ricky, who knows. Anyway, if we can't trade out...

DRAFT
1. Chris Long - To me, the only player in the draft who is much better than all others at his position. We need a pass rush. If Jake Long was a definite great at LT, I'd say him...but lots of people don't think so. And Dorsey might be a little too small, and everyone thinks Ellis is moving up now anyway. So, Chris Long it is.

2a. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - I'm pretty sure he'll be gone here, but this isn't the real draft. So, I'll put him here haha. I don't want to miss out on another Cromartie. We need CB help, and FA cb's seem to be going for so much these days. This is where a Dallas trade-down could have really helped.

2b. I had liked all the trade talks for this pick. I'd personally love Roy Williams from the Lions, like had been mentioned, but this is very unlikely. I think they need a big, athletic number one wr who can catch, and this sure would fill a need. CJ is too much like Ginn and could make it difficult for our QB. So, I'll go with a much needed run stopping NT. Hopefully someone like Red Bryant from Texas A&M. He's big, 6-5 330, just like Parcells likes them.

3. A tight end! - This is a serious need I think. Someone like Carlson, Rucker, Bennett...Whichever is there. I don't know the major specifics really, but anyone would be an improvement over Martin this year I'd bet. If for some reason James Hardy drops here, I'd like to take him and aim for a TE next round (one of them would still be there I think?). I personally think he'll go in the first, but tons of draft sites having him sticking around forever. can hope I guess?

4. Here's where I don't know anymore... We need OL desperately, but I don't much about them. An OT could go in and replace any of my other picks so far. Or Go for one of the TE's if we go WR with the third. With the rest of the draft we need LB, a QB, some DB depth...basically everything.

If any of these picks don't work out...I'd like players such as Sweed, Fred davis, Cherilus, Talib...however any of them may fall to us...You know how the draft works sometimes.

FREE AGENCY- Hmmm, I'd try getting players with good value, not asking for superstar money. Hamlin, Quinn Gray, and Berrian are the players I'd be looking at. We do have a lot of money, so maybe one of the big CB names, but it seems unlikely. Maybe a new OT (well, hopefully).

Looking Ahead - I am excited to drop more players in hopes to get younger, newer players to build for the future. I might be one of the few...but I'd trade any player we have (besides Ronnie Brown) for extra draft picks, even if they were later rounds. If someone offered a 2nd for JT, I'd go for it. He's been helpful and a great player. But, I think he's a little too negative in the media once the season comes around, and we aren't looking to go to the Super Bowl in the very near future. So, it'd be nice for him to go somewhere where he has a shot.

I hope Lorenzo Booker gets a good chance next year. I thought he looked great when he played, and deserves a lot of touches once the season starts.

I hope John Beck is the future, and I think he will start next year....with a resigned Trent Green or Quinn Gray behind him, and a late round pick (4th, 6th, undrafted like Romo?)

I do not think Matt Ryan should be the number 1 pick. If we're going to be paying money for a number 1, I want someone who comes in and makes an impact on this struggling team next year. Not many rookie qb's can do that. If he were Peyton Manning, I'd say yes, sure...but, he's not and he is not a number 1 pick in most drafts. We don't know what we have in Beck. If he succeeds, that would sure be one unnecessary and expensive pick.

Thanks for reading, didn't mean to go so long! Let's see what everyone else is thinking..

Go Dolphins!!!!!

Fun idea

What would I do?

Trade Jason Taylor to a team that feels they are one player away from a SB contender, hopefully for a 2nd rounder.

Draft (first 3 rounds):
1. Chris Long
2. Dominique Rogers-Cromartie
2. Shawn Crable
2. Martellus Bennett
3. Kendall Langford

Free Agency:
Bryant Johnson
Mike Wahle
Chad Pennington (if released)
Kris Wilson
A big NT (Williams, Kelly, Sopoaga, Kelley, Starks). If Detroit will trade Rogers for Roth or Crowder, I'd have to consider it.

id definatly live with that!

If I'm GM, I recognize that turning the Dolphins around hinges on QB play. Miami has tried every "work around" at the position. Bringing in backups who had various degrees of success in backup duty. Bring in veteran retreads. And drafting sleeper QB pics instead of the franchise guy.

I recognize those past mistakes and see Matt Ryan. I see the guy who has the best shot to be a franchise QB. I draft him. Let him compete with Beck. I also bring in a veteran who can be had for cheap to start the season e.g. Todd Collins. I let Matt Ryan slowly develop because he can due to the fact he's not already 27 years old. While Ryan develops into that franchise QB I fix the rest of the team around him starting with the Offensive and defensive lines.

Easier said than done, but this is how I look at it.

Looks great to me. :hi5:

I don't sign any high priced FA's, it would be a waste at this point, I wait until I know I'm a player or two away from the uppertier teams.

I don't draft Matt Ryan. I sign a Vet and let Beck and the Vet battle it out for starter.

I try and trade down, but if I can't I take either Dorsey or Chris Long, it depends on which one my head coach feels will work best in his defense.

I go defense heavy in the draft looking for beef, LB's CB's and safteys by BPA when I pick, but may use a 2nd on a TE and a 4th on Henne if he is still on the board at that time.

The Dolphins aren't just filling a hole or two away from contenting, they need to overhaul the overall 53 man talent base. I personally wouldn't sign a lot of big money free agents, and would rather do the 2001 Belichick plan where you just replenish the talent base from top to bottom by taking fliers on a lot of the Tier B to Tier C free agents.

Also, the Dolphins just HAVE to find a defensive tackle/noseguard who can plug the run with the type of football Parcells/Sporano want to play. So they need to take a cheap flier on several players and see what pans out. This along with TE are the two glaring weaknesses of the Dolphins roster that I can assure you Parcells will adress sooner rather than later.

Free Agency
1) Mike Wahle
2) Randy Starks
3) Reggie Torbor
4) Keyshawn
5) Terrance Copper
6) Keith Davis
7) Jimmy Kennedy

Finally, some vet QB ... I don't care who it is .. who just wants a chance to start this year to try to prove himself to the league again. Their job is to basically get their brains beat in next year behind a rebuilding OL while Beck/Rookie Draft Pick get another year to develop before getting their chance a year or two down the road. Rex Grossman, Josh McCown, Tim Rattay .. any of these guys will do.

I do resign Crowder, who I think will fit well into an 3-4 ILB, and possibly Hadnot depending on his price.

Draft
1) Chris Long
Trade Down from #32 to mid/late 2nd and pick up extra 3rd..
2a) John Carlson
2b) Branden Albert
3a) Joe Flacco
3b) Red Bryant

QB - Grossman??
WR - Ted Ginn
WR - Keyshawn/Cooper/Hagans
TE - Carlson
OT - Albert
G - Mike Wahle
C - Spertele
G - ???
T - Vernon Carey
RB - Booker/Brown

DE - Vonnie Holliday
NG - Starks/Bryant/Kennedy
DE - Chris Long

WOLB - Taylor
WILB - Crowder
SILB - Torbor
SOLB - Joey Porter

CB - Allen
SS - Keith Davis
FS - Allen
CB - ??

As long as Flacco and Beck are developing and pushing each other to compete for the future QB spot, that's a good start for year one.

What would I do?

Trade:
Matt Roth for Shaun Rogers

FA:
Flozell Adams
Ken Hamlin

Draft:
1. C. Long DE, Virgina
2a. A. Cason CB, Arizona
2b. A. Collins OT, Kanas
3. Phillip Wheeler LB, Ga. Tech
4. Oniel Cousins OT, UTEP
6. Adrian Arrington, WR, UM
7. BPA......

Leaves WR, TE and LB to be addressed

I totally agree agree on not overspending for any big name FA's :woot:

I think we need to focus primarily on making smart draft picks, and we should try everything we can to trade down our first overall pick. Right now we just have Beck and Lemon as our QB's, so I think we should bring in a quality vet, Collins, maybe a Billy Volek, I could even live with McNabb, but not for an early draft pick. I think we need to add some monster size NT's, and DE's, and we need lotsa help with our d-backs......Rogers-Cromartie, or Talib or Kansas would fit the bill. I think we also need a big receiver or a tight end like Fred Davis of USC. :)

Keep Beck as the man. Give him one full year unless he is just so dreadful we cant watch anymore. PIck up a Vet to back him up, maybe...dare I say it... Trent Green. Draft Chris Long, or trade down to Dallas and then draft super heavy on Defense and Wideouts. I would focus on replacing Taylor and Thomas while they are still around to mentor, and I would look for a shutdown corner, all in the draft. Of course finding a players close to Thomas and Taylors ability along with a shutdown corner in one draft is near impossible, but hey, we could get lucky for once.

.

Did Zach Thomas retire????? :ponder:

Best Case Scenario for FA & Draft IMO...

With all the youngsters on the offensive side the ball, im thinking it makes the most sense to infuse the offense with some good veteran leadership, preferably an Alan Faneca type on the oline, maybe a Joe Horn for the WR's,
and add a veteran TE, and most definitely an experienced QB backup for John Beck. I think we already have plenty of leadership on Defense, i think we just need an infusion of a few dominant players from this years DRAFT to re energize those guys. I think this ship will turn and chart a course back to respectability alot faster than most think, JUST ME HUMBLE OPINION.

GO DOLPHINS !!

Joe Horn is Done. I am all for signing young players and a stop gap o-line that's a veteran. we should not overspent on old players.

Ok where do I start...

Offense needs to run:

62% Run 38% Pass (Don't ask about the percent I just think we should run alot more than pass.)

Defense needs to run:

We need size and youth to do so.

3-4

Free Agents

We don't NEED any high dollar free agents. We need young guys that are hungry to win. Also we need to work on depth. Now don't get me wrong we need a couple of big play guys, and they are going to take more money than a young low profile guy but NO top dollar guys.

Offense:

QB (A seasoned vet, such as, B. Volek, J. Sorgi.)
HB (We have depth and talent)
FB (Maybe a older vet that knows what he is doing at all times)
WR (I'm thinking we might atempt to pick up J. Walker, if released, B. Johnson, D. Hackett, Bernard Berrian we NEED a bigger stronger receiving core.)
TE (We need to have a more talented guy out of here. Such as B. Troupe)
OL (Need to get more size and strength, I'm hoping we pick up, F. Adams, J. Gross, S. Locklear, M. Starks.)

Defense:

DL (I. Sopoaga, J. Smith, R. Starks, K. Oelhoffen should do a good job feeling up some holes)
LB (We need one more smart quick LB to set this LBing core such as, B. Bailey, D. Clark, K. Dansby, C. Pace, J. Trotter.)
DB (This is our biggest weaknest imo, we need some youth and speed out here also need smarts. A player like D. Florence, K. Hamlin, M. Williams, E. Wilson.)

Now with all the free agents said I know that we will not pick up everyone but some guys are very good bang for buck with my final roster I will say what I think will be the most likely guys from this list.

Draft

Trade with anyone who in the top 12 and pick up another early 2nd and 3rd round with our number one overall. With that said our draft would look something like (Now if this trade happens I would expect a above average player coming with the trade.):

1a. OL (R. Glady)
1b. WR/S (M. Jenkins, R. Smith, M. Kelly)
2a. CB/WR (L. Sweed, D. Cromartie)
2b. OLB/ILB/TE (P. Wheeler, C. Lofton, F. Davis)
2c. OLB/ILB/TE (S. Crable, J. Mayo, M. Bennett)
3a. OLB/ILB (G. Hayes, B. Moffitt)
3b. DL (T. Blake, J. Shirley, N. Hayden)
5. QB (T. Ostrander, K. O'Connell, B. Cox)
6. WR (A. Shields, L. Sam, M. Henderson)
7. DL (A. Reynolds, C. McKillop, K. Saunders)

With all the daft choices in place here is what our roster would look like according to what I think will be most realistic and would still keep us under the cap.

Starting Roster for 2008

Offense:

QB: John Beck/Billy Volek/Matt Baker
HB: Ronnie Brown/Ricky Williams/Lorenzo Booker/Jesse Chatman
FB: R. Mauia/Brad Hoover
WR: Benard Berrian/Ted Ginn/Limas Sweed/Derick Hagan/Kerry Reed
TE: Ben Troupe/Fred Davis/Justin Peelle
OL: Flozell Adams/Ryan Glady/Samson Satele/Vernon Carey/Rex Hadnot

Defense:

Whoever is in bold will get 80% of playing time:

DL: Jason Taylor/Kimo von Oelhoffen/Vonnie Holliday/Matt Roth/Junior Glymph/Tommy Blake
LB: Zach Thomas/Jason Taylor/Channing Crowder/Joey Porter/Shawn Grable/Calvin Pace/Geno Hayes
CB: Will Allen/Drayton Florence/Eugene Wilson/Michael Lehan/Travis Daniels/Joey Thomas
SS: Reggie Smith/Yeramiah Bell
FS: Ken Hamlin/Jason Allen

Ok finally done I know that this might seem like its not reasonable but it really is! If we could get our roster to look like this I think we could be a winning team in 2008.

This was fun!

my wish list is simple draft BPA with all our draft picks then see whats available in FA for a decent money...

Then repeat in year 09
