"December 14, 2005
Last Sunday in San Diego, the Dolphins became just the fifth team this year to hold the Chargers vaunted running attack to less than 100 yards. A major factor in this feat was the performance of middle linebacker Zach Thomas, who was recognized for leading this assault as he was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for games of December 11-12."

Lots of Phins superlatives nominated this week:

" DEFENSE: LB ZACH THOMAS, MIAMI DOLPHINS
After missing two games due to injury, Miami linebacker Zach Thomas played an integral role in the Dolphins' 23-21 victory at San Diego. Thomas slammed the door on nearly one dozen of the Chargers' offensive snaps with a team-best 11 tackles and an interception. San Diego entered the game with the NFL's No. 2-scoring offense, averaging 29.8 points-per-game. Six of the 11 tackles compiled by the five-time AFC All-Star were spent on stopping the Chargers' standout rusher, La Dainian Tomlinson. Thomas was a key cog in limiting Tomlinson to 75 rushing yards on 21 carries (3.6-yard average). Sunday's 75 yards for Tomlinson marked the ninth-lowest total he has gained in the 44 games that he has had 20 or more rushes. With the West Coast victory, Thomas and the Dolphins (6-7) remain in the AFC's playoff picture.

In his 10th season from Texas Tech, this is Thomas' second career Player of the Week honor (Week 1, 2001).

Other nominees for AFC Offensive Player of Week 14 were:

Miami wide receiver Chris Chambers, who recorded eight receptions for 121 yards, including a pair of TDs from eight and 35 yards. Chambers became the third Dolphin to post three consecutive 100-yard receiving games, and the first since Irving Fryar did it in a club-record four games in a row in 1994.

Miami quarterback Gus Frerotte, who completed 14 of 22 passes (63.6 percent) for 229 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for his season-high passer rating of 128.8.

Other nominees for AFC Special Teams Player of Week 12 were:

Miami kicker Olindo Mare, who split the uprights on all three of his field goal tries (29, 39 and 20 yards), which proved to be the margin of victory. Mare also recorded his first career fumble recovery on a kickoff that led to a Dolphins touchdown. "

[font=Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][size=-1]Thomas is the third Dolphin to earn AFC Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season, and the fourth to win Player of Week honors overall, including the third in as many games.

DOLPHINS 2005 PLAYER OF THE WEEK WINNERS

FS Lance Schulters (Defense) - Sept. 25 vs. Carolina
DE Jason Taylor (Defense) - Nov. 27 at Oakland
WR Chris Chambers (Offense) - Dec. 4 vs. Buffalo
LB Zach Thomas (Defense) - Dec. 11 at San Diego

You see a trend forming? So much for those who wanted to see these guys get traded to some other team.:shakeno:
My thought was always bring in talented guys to compliment those that were already here performing at a very high standard, now imagine what kind of team the dolphins would be.

wow...who would've thought Dolphins players would get this kind of respect? Did we even have a single offensive or defensive player of the week last season?

Congrats to Zach. If this recent trend continues, I suppose Ronnie Brown or Randy McMichael should make room on their mantle for next week. :p
