2009 Miami Heat Offseason Thread

A day after it was confirmed that Michael Beasley had entered a Houston rehab facility, a clearer picture regarding the status of the Miami Heat forward has come into focus.

Sources familiar with the case said Beasley's stay at the facility is primarily related to the NBA's substance-abuse program, with this visit planned in advance.

In addition, while concerns have been raised about Beasley's mental well-being in the wake of web postings by the 20-year-old and comments from those close to him, those concerns have been overstated, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Under league rules, neither those affiliated with individual teams nor those in the league office are allowed to comment on individual cases regarding the NBA's substance-abuse policy.

It's September; has Riley's time arrived?

"As you know, the best deals happen somewhere between September and probably February. And what you look out for is you look out and you wait and you try to create or you pry loose or you're in the mix for a great player, bad contract, team that wants to move on with that guy."

Granted, September 1 is only a starting point in that timeframe. There certainly is plenty of time between now and the mid-February trading deadline.

And yet, Allen Iverson remains unsigned, Carlos Boozer remains luxury-tax ballast for the Jazz, and more than a few personnel situations are percolating around the league.

Riley asked for patience in August. It's not as if Iverson got away in the interim or Boozer was sent packing elsewhere for the type of expiring contracts the Heat continues to hold in abundance.

In fact, to a degree, Riley's patience was vindicated. Iverson might just to come around on his demands on playing time. The small-market Jazz can't possibly pay one of the largest luxury-tax bills in the NBA.
