Sean Payton had one person in mind for his defensive coordinator when he accepted the Denver Broncos' head-coaching job -- Vic Fangio.

Payton wasn't able to get Fangio as the former Broncos head coach decided to take a job with the Miami Dolphins to be their defensive coordinator instead. The power of Payton wasn't enough to lure Fangio back to Denver, which Payton can only ponder "what if."

"Do I think he would have been a great asset for us? Yes," Payton said Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine, via DenverSports.com. "We were planning if the right scenario came up that we'd work together. This one was a little unique because it wasn't too long ago he was here."

As long as the Saints had given Payton the okay to talk to teams, it didn’t matter if Payton talked to the Broncos or any other team during the season.

Payton just couldn’t sign with another team to be their HC until a trade agreement was worked out between the Saints and the team Payton was hired by.

The Saints still had Payton under contract but they already had a new head coach. So the rules forbidding the contacting of a head coach during the season didn’t apply with Payton. Because all the Saints wanted for Payton was the best trade they could get for him.

Interesting how Payton wanted to hire a fired Broncos head coach to be his DC only to miss out and hire a different fired Broncos head coach to be his DC.

I’m glad we got Fangio and Vance didn’t comeback here.
He wasn't going down without having a fired Denver former HC in charge of his D.
