Browns' pick injured

BEREA, Ohio · Cleveland rookie defensive back Sean Jones is likely to miss the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

The Browns' second-round draft pick out of Georgia, Jones tore his ACL when he jumped to intercept a ball during practice.

"It's pretty disappointing," Jones said.

When he planted his leg, receiver Dennis Northcutt dove into his knee.

"It was an unfortunate and a freaky type of a deal," Browns coach Butch Davis said Thursday.

Also, Atlanta safety Keion Carpenter has been injured and will miss 2004. And, on top of that, a neck specialist has recommended that LB John Mobley miss the entire 2004 season.

Thats a whole bevy of injuries.

BTW with the two safeties going down, think we should offer up one of our three safeties that are competing for the FS position? I don't know if anyone would give anything up for Edwards since he's injury prone (although the highest profile of the bunch) but Atlanta or Cleveland might decide to sniff around Arturo Freeman. With Bell coming on, I would not mind dealing Freeman and going into the season with Bell and Edwards (and it would secure Shawn Wooden a spot on the team again...I like him he's such a nice guy and extremely active in the community).

Would trade him for anything higher than a 3rd rounder. Perhaps for northcutt??? We could use a 3rd wr. Doubt they would do that but its worth a sniff.

They aint trading Northcut, but I would shop Freeman in a second. Knowing we have Edwards to start, and Bell a much cheaper and future player who is impressing coaches. We are going to wind up cutting someone anyway. Let's be smart. Good Post Parrot.

We'd be lucky to get a 6th rounder for one of our safeties. I'd rather keep them and let them battle it out in training camp..

 a conditional 6th. You always overvalue your own players....

Freeman's going rate was about a 5th rounder prior to 2003. He didn't have any takers at that time but that was a period in which teams had other options at safety. If the Falcons and Browns were counting on Jones and Carpenter to start, then they could be in a situation with few options.

If the price is right I do.

By the way scratch out a possible trade between Miami and Atlanta. Carpenter was a starter last season but struggled along with all the secondary, set to be a backup in 2004 but now out for the year.

I'd say Freeman to Cleveland for a 6th is a possibility.

So would you do that trade? I don't think I would. Even if Freeman is a backup, I'd rather have him than a 6th rounder.
If Cleveland made it a 5th, then I'd think about it.

Even a 6th rounder is a dream. Safeties are a dime a dozen. Arturo didn't get any interest whatsoever as a 5th rounder. We'd be lucky to get a 7th. Let em compete.

I do not know what he would get us in return, but his value to the team is at least a 5th rounder. If we could not get that for him... keep him.

That being said, everyone that says he would get us a (fill in your number here) round pick... How do you know? I personally never thought we could get David Boston for what we did... Unless you work in a front office and are speaking on what your team would give, I don't think you should say that the team would not get a higher round pick than your opinion. The NFL is a funky org... hard to predict.

they are not looking for a starter either...

Browns search for safety depth
The Browns are looking at Bucs safety David Gibson for depth at the safety position. Gibson signed with the Bucs last year during the season and is experienced in the Cover 2 scheme employed by the Bucs and Colts. The Browns currently have veterans Robert Griffith and Earl Little at safety and need some depth in case of injury.

How do we know? Cause he spent all of last year as an RFA. His cost was only a 5th rounder and no one even looked at him or even mentioned his name. That's how we know.
