With so much talk about Pat White', let's take a look at the development Dolphins' 2009 draft class. The issue in any draft isn't the misses - every team misses. It's the nature of the draft. The issue is who you hit on. If you get three starterrs, it's a decent draft. Four guys on the roster, it's a good one. We're a year away from final conclusions, but this looks to be a good draft class for the Dolphins.
1. CB Vontae Davis (28th overall). Started as a rookie, showed glimpses that he can be very good. Yep, I'm one of those wondering about his preseason and if it means he's not going to make the hoped-for leap this season year. Still, he's going to start for years. At worst, he's an average CB. We're still waiting to see how good he'll be.
2. Pat White (44th overall). His time is done.
2. CB Sean Smith (61st overall).. Same story as with Davis. He was the better cover corner as a rookie. But the coaches questioned his work this training camp and this year will go a long way to seeing if he's just another cornerback or something more.
3. WR Patrick Turner (87th) . After an empty rookie year, you saw a glimpse of something with a 34-yard catch in the first preseason game. One catch for 7 yards against Jacksonville. The question remains: Is there anything there? The fact we're still asking that is probably answer enough.
4. WR Brian Hartline (108, from Raiders in Samson Satele trade). Good pick. Three touchdowns, 31 catches and 16.3-yard average as a rookie. He's in a good spot starting opposite Brandon Marshall.
5. John Nalbone (161). Done.
5. Chris Clemons (165), from Colts in draft-day trade down). Not exactly sure who he is yet, but the fact he's starting from this point in the draft tells you something. But don't forget the Dolphins made free-agent offers to Ryan Clark and Antrel Rolle, so they're not exactly sure what Clemons is either.
6. Andrew Gardner (181 , from Raiders in Samson Satele deal). He's in the mix on the offensive line. Good value pick
7. J.D. Folson (214). Done
Bottom line: For all the talk of White and Turner, this is an above-average draft with the chance to be better than that. Davis, Smith and Hartline should have productive careers. Clemons will show what he has this year. Garnder adds to the roster.
