If you don't think that Ross as a local high school grad and Palm Beach landed gentry wouldn't have bought the Fins instead of the jets if both were simultaneous available, then I don't know what to tell you. But if he bought the jets as an opportunistic business opportunity, why wouldn't he root for the team he owns whatever it is. I'm sure Bud Adams and Ralph Wilson from their respective Houston and Detroit area homes root for the Titans and Bills...

If I may interject for a moment,

Read the goddamn article based on who the author is. You all try to take a stab at B/R's reputation any time an article is posted. I had similar experience with posters every time I posted an article I had written when I used to write with them, and it's not needed. It takes a lot of craft and time to put together a well-thought piece, so how about since we know it's CK, we read the article instead of being dicks about it. That might be a nice change around here.

I would spend hours, in my free time, to write articles because it's what I loved doing (I was never paid to write for B/R). Every time I posted I had several people say the typical "It's B/R, move along" and it got very frustrating seeing my hard work and time spent on something people were going to flame just because of the medium it was published through.

So, since CK put time, effort and research into an article, how about we comment on the contents of the article rather than stuff that is completely unrelated to the content of the article.

Ross has stated numerous times that he was a Dolphins fan in the days of Marino and Duper and that was well before his attempt to buy the Jets in 1999. Unless you are calling Ross a liar based on his early life geography you can't really say he was not a Dolphins fan in the 80s and 90s. You have no proof that shows he was not a Dolphins fan and any argument is just speculation.

Vaark makes a good point that the Jets attempt was probably purely just a buisness move and you even backed it up when you said he spends most of his time in New York. Much more easier to run a NFL franchise when they are located in your current backyard. He spent his childhood in Miami and as an adult lives mostly in New York. Makes perfect sense why he would try to first buy the team where he currently is and his next choice be the team he was the fan of most. If he didn't like the Dolphins or wasn't a fan, why not buy the Vikings? Or the Chargers? Or the Browns? Or the Jaguars? Ross obviously had an attachment to the city of Miami and the Dolphins.

Now Ross might not have been as big of a fan as the people here on FinHeaven but it sounds like if you asked him in the 80s what his favorite team was the answer was the Dolphins.

Ross also said during a Romney fundraiser that government handouts is socialism and anti-american.

Ross plays the media as he feels like and as needed and most of us buy into it. If Ross would have bought the Jets he would have said that he became a fan during the Namath years. Do you really believe that a person buys a team and then would admit being a fan of the division rival or at least say that he was not a fan of the team he just bought? Pleassse!

It's absolutely so precious how Chowderhead has now become a sage in the eyes of some, who when he played, considered him an idiot because it now form-fits their closed-minded negative agenda. Mark Cuban grew up in Pittburgh - so he's not a real Mavericks fan, nor would he have been a real Cubs or Dodgers fan if the short-sighted MLB would have approved his bids. No way Bud Adams out of Houston or Ralph Wilson out of Detroit are real Titans or Bills fans - especially Adams who had the audacity to move his team out of his own city.

Oh and as far as an astute, successful businessman making a bid for jest, how about even long before that?

IMO, a refusal to concede the possible, let alone obvious, says more about those who dismiss Ross's motivations out of hand, than it comes close to saying about Ross.

Your defense of Ross in all honor but you have to realize that the Dolphins are only a business investment for Ross. He did not grow up in south Florida. All biographies of him list that he was raised in Detroit. The high school in Miami is merely a footnote. Let's not forget that his high school graduation was a decade or so before the Dolphins were founded.
This link is the closest I ever found where Ross has a dated move to south Florida: his freshman high school year!!!!!!!!!

Born in 1940, Ross grew up in northwest Detroit. His father was an inventor, never terribly successful, who moved the family to Florida when Ross was a freshman in high school.

So he lived at most 4 years in south Florida. Hardly what I call 'growing up'.

And how do you consolidate the fact that he actually attempted to buy the Jets with being a "life long" Dolphins fan????? And if you would argue that the Jets would have been a simple business decision what makes you think the Dolphins are not. Pretty much all arguments you have brought forth (from high school to growing up etc) have been rendered useless in your effort to defend Ross.
All his interests from business to personal life is in New York. Florida is just for some properties, satellite offices and a tax related residence. His main residency is still NYC.

Ross has no emotional allegiance to the Dolphins. They are a simple business investment. And if he wants to improve the Stadium for $200 Million he should do so with his own money. Any 'socialist' government handout just shows what a hypocrite he is. He can also donate a gazillion dollars to whatever or whoever he wants to but don't cry me a river that nobody pays for the upgrades. We have two billionaire owners of the Dolphins (Wayne still owns 5%) and a bunch of millionaire celebrities with some minor shares. You don't think between that group they can come up with the necessary dollars to expand and improve their very own business?
Just an FYI: Wayne also still has a 5% stake in the Stadium.

You gotta understand that if anyone, and I mean anyone, writes or says anything even slightly critical of the dolphins, a certain group will always attack them and try to discredit them. How well thought out, well written or how logical it is is irrelevant. If its critical of the dolphins, they will be attacked.

You realize that every single business can claim this but on a much smaller scale right?

Also, if your tying it to the amount of money generated then you can also say that DISNEY for example has the right then to ask for millions to create new park rides then because that does the same thing Ross' football team does and if anything I'd be willing to bet that Disney World does more for the Florida economy (of which the City of Orlando and Kissimmee would benefit from mostly).

I don't know, does anyone have the time to research if Disney asked for money to help build that new Fantasy land or did they pay for it themselves?

How about the Hard Rock or say even the Malls like Sawgrass Mills and Dolphin mall? I am not sure about any of those places concerning public or private ownership but I am pretty sure those places are privately owned and yet I cant remember them ever being in the news asking for public funds to upgrade anything, yet they draw millions of people a year and also bring in revenue.

I don't see why a privately owned stadium needs public funds. If he cant afford it, then go to a BANK and get a loan like any other business would have to. Then payback your loan and that's it.

....or why doesn't he ask the Feds for a grant if he's doing so much public 'good' and see how much they can give him?

Who do you think pays for the roads, the lights, and everything else associated with getting to those establishments.

Just about every business everywhere gets some sort of tax break either for creating jobs or establishing a business.
