About as much as basing a season's success on what does or does not happen in a pre-season game or two. That's fools gold.....
To an extent that's true. Wins and losses don't count. Miscues on the part of third stringers who aren't going to be around on opening day don't matter much, either. However, how the first unit offense and defense play against opponents' first units are very good indicators of how the team is likely to play during the season. A starting offensive line that struggles in pass protection or run blocking is likely to continue to do that. A starting QB who misses open receivers in preseason is likely to do the same when it counts. Sloppy tackling in preseason by the defensive starters usually returns to haunt defenses that don't master fundamental techniques.
