With all this qb talk, what made MARINO slip so far?

Yeah, the team was a real party bunch his senior year. And Marino got tagged as the poster child, even though his teammates to this day say he didn't partake. That was the biggest reason, along with his subpar senior year.

His mechanics were always considered unorthodox. But Jackie Sherril told him best. "Don't ever let anyone change the way you throw the ball". :)

I thought everyone was doing coke in 82 :rofl3:

I was waiting for someone to state the reality of the times about that.

We went into this in another thread, but there were two big reasons Dan dropped to us - and then some minor ones.

The two big ones were 1) His senior year was a let down and many questioned his mechanics, thinking they had gotten off track or that he had always had bad mechanics.... they were unorthodox.

2) There were rumors that the USFL wanted to make Dan their prime-time hero. Some teams, particularly the money-tight teams, were afraid that the USFL was going to throw them into a bidding war for Dan if they drafted him and that he would end up costing too much.

Most coaches/personnel guys willing to talk about it give different reasons. But those were the biggest.

I think anyone who says they didn't draft Dan because of drug rumors is covering for their blunder. If makes them look much better if they tell you that than they tell you they thought he wasn't worth it.

Rumors of drug use and a low Wonderlic score scared many teams off.

There were 3 main reasons.

First his senior year was horrible. His wrs graduated and his stats sufferred. He forced a lot of throws (reading defenses was never his strength). People questioned his mechanics. They were unique and unorthodox.

Second there were the coke rumors.

Third his wonderlich score was terrible. Combine that with a player forcing passes and people wondered if he was smart enough to figure out NFL defenses.

After his junior year he was the #2 prospect behind Elway. After his senior year he definately dropped behind Kelly on everybody's board and behind Blackledge on some. The Ken O'Brien pick by the Jets came out of left field.

The Pittsburgh Steelers would have had 8 or 9 rings now had they drafted Marino...their loss was our gain. :)

Dan Marino....Best Ever!!!!
