Zim’s Grades For The Game Week 1 Edition

unclear to me how to grade the OL. could give them the A on the basis off pass pro. but the run game was not great. i have no idea how much of that was the OL, how much of that was the play calling (never really tried to establish the run) and how much of it is the backs. i don't think the backs were the problem...soooo?????

The run game was actually fine.

It's just MM and Tua wanted to show the NFL they may want to find a new blueprint to stop them. They doubled down.

O line gets a A+ from me personally.

Even with Tuas quick release and excellent pocket presence and movement.

With 45 dropbacks, against Mack and Bosa with no sacks is beyond amazing

Not sure Elliot can play.

Not sure if the reason Brandon Jones wasn't out there is because he isn't 100% yet, or if he isn't a fit in this scheme (which would suck).

I know David Long can play, and have no idea what he was doing out there today.

I was wondering about David Long too. I don’t know if he was injured but if he was healthy, I don’t know why he wasn’t on the field after the 1st quarter.

I agree with your grades. The offense played excellent for the majority of the game. The defense sucked against the run but they showed up when they had to on the Chargers last drive.

A win is a win and now on to New England.

Nice, Zim and finally back to the real thing, games that count.

I haven't seen the majority of the game yet, but have to give props to Berrios. Two big catches down the stretch.

Was very pleased with the offensive line. At least the defense came up big at the end.

yeah but that would be the same blueprint from last year where they just throw and never try to establish the run. if this is how they are gonna do it, don't even know why they were flirting with dalvin cook and jonathan taylor

I get that.

But I honestly think Tua and MM are a diferrent breed.

This game they both wanted to show why Tuas Miamis QB not Herbert. It was personal.

I don't expect this to be a weekly thing. But if it works.... why not

What might get lost in todays win was Mike McDaniel not taking a knee with 9 seconds left in the 1st half and the Dolphins having the ball on THEIR OWN 25 yard line and scoring a FG. In a game we won by 2 points that was the difference. Today might have been McDaniel’s best game as a head coach

Welcome Back Phins Fans!! The NFL schedule makers dropped a tough road game against a very good Chargers team for week 1. As usual, nothing that I thought would happen actually did. I thought the OL was going to be bad today. WRONG. I thought the DL was going to be good today: WRONG. I thought Tua would have an average day at best today. WRONG. The proper conclusion ladies and gentlemen is, I’m no Nostradamus. That is for sure. Now onto the grades:

QB - A : Tua had a great day against a good NFL defense. There is no other way to spin it other than that. 466 yards and a 110 QBR. Add in 3 TD’s and it’s a huge day by our QB when we needed it. If he didn’t fumble the ball and throw the pick….We walk away with this game easily…And Tua gets the A+. Regardless, I’ll take an A effort from our QB any day.

RB’s - B : I’m giving the RB’s a generous B grade today. We only ran for 70 yards today and 5 of that was by Tua. However, using EZ E as a back worked decently. Mostert had 37 yards today and ran hard. What earned this group the B was their pass protection. They helped the OL keep Tua upright today.

OL - A - : The much maligned OL played exceptionally today. Without Armstead, I expected to see Tua leave the stadium in hearse today. How wrong I was. Lamb played great today. My next sentence is something I never thought I would say…. Austin Jackson was VERY GOOD today. I didn’t hear Bosa’s name nor did I hear Mack’s. Great game by these guys. I am impressed.

WR’s - A + : With Halloween just around the corner, the best way to scare opposing defensive backfields is to wear a Tyreek Hill mask around town. The entire Chargers defensive backfield is going to have NIGHTMARES about Hill tonight. Waddle and the rest of the guys were clutch as well. Great game by this unit. A well deserved A +.

TE’s - B + : Smythe had a good game and came up clutch for us. 3 Catches for 44 yards is a good day.

DL - D - : Holy **** these guys got blown off the ball all day. The only thing that saved them from an F is the way they played on the last drive to save the win. Kudos for stepping up when they had to. Regardless, I’m concerned about the run defense. We’ll have to keep an eye on that all year.

LB’s - D - : Again, the last drive saved these guys from the F. David Long? Did he play? Baker? I think I saw him once. Chubb and Phillips were non factors for the most part. This unit has to improve and soon.

DB’s - C : X was flagged at least 3 times today. Not good from him today. Holland was good in run support, but that was typically 8 yards down the field. We need this unit to show up better next week.

ST’s - C : The glaring errors were a bad 38 yard punt by Bailey and a missed XP by Sanders. The missed XP could have lost us the game if not for our defense stepping up. Otherwise, Sanders made the kicks he needed to. Mediocre effort.

Coaching - B - : McDaniel gets an A for the game plan and his play calling. The offense was on fire today. Fangio gets a D. He had some well dialed up blitzes near the end….But his Defense was torn up for the most part. Added together, it’s a B-. I added a little in for the win.

Conclusion: A great start to the year. Let there be no question: Tua is a top 5 QB in this league. The future looks bright for us…..As soon as we can stop the run. On to New England!!
Bailey only punted once and it sucked. We’re only going to see him maybe 3 times a game tops..he better do better.

1st and 2nd downs were throwing downs, and both were incomplete (although I though Tua could have ran that 1st down in). We used 12 seconds in 2 plays. You can't do that there. Yes, you want to score, but you need to be smart. If you score on 1st down, fine. Let your defense win the game. But, you need to run on 1 of those 2 downs, if not both. I'm not saying you don't score, but a great coach uses more clock there.
I'm sorry, but with all due respect you're out of your goddamn mind. You run twice in those downs and don't score and the fanbase would rightfully be up in arms. You can't assume you're going to score no matter what you do. You have to call your best plays, and if your best plays are too successful you can't complain very much about that. We're not a dink and dunk team, nor a running team. You stick to what you're good at or what happened to the Chargers happens to us.

That and the 4th and 7 call. We have to remember plays like these when we criticize the aggressive calls that backfire, because they will backfire sometimes. Overall, McD's aggressiveness has been a huge asset for this team last year and so far this year.

I had to abandon the American Legion Canteen because they had all the games except the Dolphins.

I went down the road to a JB Butler's and watched it there. A lady Steelers fan, along with the other five folks I sat with at the bar were overwhelmed by the Dolphins come back and stopping of the Chargers.

They couldn't believe that some of those passes were caught and with the replays they could see, and commented on, the perfect placement of the ball, relative to the defensive players positions.

They applauded as a group when our defenses' last series of plays stymied the Chargers. This was a group of folks that I had never met in my life and were wearing other teams' jerseys.

A lot of the folks in the place had just watched the Panthers game and stayed on to watch whatever was on the screen, so they were not a bunch of Dolphins fans, but they were overwhelmingly impressed by the Dolphins play in this game.

I was "moderately" happy myself and did a lot of shouting and applauding. At first, they looked at me and smiled sadly as I introduced myself as a Dolphins fan. In the end, they were as impressed as I was with the Dolphins. that says more about the Dolphins level of play than most of the posts I'm reading here, and it really cheered me up. I forgot about the "Lemmings" until I got on the forum tonight.

I will leave a "food for thought" picture of a depository for "Lemmings" posts:

That pretty much covers it. - LOL

Smythe and Ingold were clutch today. Loved that they got involved.

A play that slipped through the radar was an Ahmed run where he broke a tackle at the line and ripped off 9 or 10 yards. I think it was on our first scoring drive. Was really nice.

Zach Sieler showing why he got that extension. Huge sack.

just some ramblings
