For people who want Fitzpatrick at S, I think Juan Thornhill and Mike Edwards are similar players (Slimm has noted Thornhill's similarities to Fitzpatrick) - but with more of a Safety lean than Fitzpatrick.
I think that was the plan but Tank regressed badlySince Grier is the person shaping the roster, I would hope that he would say
"X at #1 corner, McCain at slot, Jones or McDonald at safety, Fitz at FS and we just need a #2 corner"
I think Tank was the plan at #2 corner last year but ?
Another note, Ed Reed and Earl Thomas are RARE for a reason. Everyone wants some young player to be them, but you can't eat with hope.
They aren't "rare". We see them everyday in today's NFL. They just haven't had the success post season as Thomas and Reed, nor are they parts of generational defenses at darn near each position like Reed.
Fitzpatrick can have the same impact as Weddle, who in some publications was he MVP of that defense. Harrison Smith is another FS who makes a major impact on the game who Fitzpatrick could rival.
Harrison Smith and Kevin Byard...Which Safeties can match Reed and/or Thomas's range?
Harrison Smith and Kevin Byard...
Good points, but think of it more like this:The way I see it, free safeties make the most impact on plays down the field which happen sparingly during games and are already low % plays to begin with. Of course having a great FS helps your defense tremendously, but Im not sure thats where I want my best(or 2nd best) defensive player to be. Teams can dink donk their way to the end zone keeping everything in front of him. Especially when talking about Minkah who does so many other things at a high level.
There are alot of ways to be creative with a player like Fitzpatrick, he can and will make plays all over the field, most of his great plays this season never happen if he's playing deep. He's great at defending screens, you can put him on guys in man and he also excels there. It's not like the guy has to learn doing those things, in fact, thats exactly what he's been doing in college. If anything, its the FS position that'd involve a learning curve for him, not the other way around...
I realize there are good arguments on both sides here, my stance is that Minkah would impact this defense alot more if you move him around and get him closer to the LOS a good portion of the time.
Its hard not to agree with this... I guess I dont see as much upside for him at FS as you do. I think ideally, the Fins would finally run those BIG nickle packages and use Minkah as their 3rd safety on the field allowing him to have pretty much any role on any given play. This is probably the optimal way to use a player with his skill set IMO...Good points, but think of it more like this:
It's not what we can do for MINKAH, but what he can do for the team.
If we play him at Nickel corner, sure his stats might improve, BUT, if he is at FS we can be more aggressive on defense as a whole.
We can blitz more or stack the box against the run. Play press man more often knowing we have one of the best insurance policies in the NFL preventing that deep pass every one is so worried about.
Is he always gonna be lined up 30 yards deep? He'll no. He has the wheels to cover that turf, which is what makes him an ideal centerfielder.
He really needs to be a full time FS with part time slot corner work.
