Veterans’ Contract Stipulations Could Force The Dolphins To Act Quickly To Clear Cap Space

This is an illusion. We are undergoing a complete rebuild, and that means jettisoning the high salaried veterans. The only question is timing. Lots of those guys are going to go and we'll have plenty of cap space. I'm also fairly certain that if we are tanking we will carry over $10M in cap space for 2020 … and like @allsilverdreams said, I think we carried over as much as $10M from last year that they're not incorporating.

According to OTC Miami has approximately $9m plus in cap space. But it doesn't include the recent signings and the carry over from 2018. My guess is it's about $18m-$20m to start. Branch, Parker, Quinn and Sitton adds an additional $35m or so to that figure, when they are officially cut.

That we have put such a poor product on the field with so few superstars and we are that cap tight just shows we should have brought in a new front office.
Tannehill is a qb so his cap number of course is outrageous although no matter what he leaves us with 13 million in dead cap spread over one or two seasons.
The Andre Branch money was beyond incompetence. Our money spent at safety is by far the highest in the league with Jones having a 17 million dollar cap hit.
We also have 27 million in cap used on 3 receivers that are not among the top 40 receivers in the league.

Hopefully we truly have a new direction. and I would have believed in a complete rebuild if we had brought in a new GM

Tannenbaum has no business being in any NFL front office, his preference to over pay for big names and spend on older and at times injury prone players has really put Miami in a bind these next 2 seasons. Miami's cap management will improve if they follow the Patriots model. Its darn near impossible to cut everyone in 2019 but by 2020 it's very possible Grant, Howard and Tunsil will be the only higher priced players on the team. Expect a lot of changes into 2021.

I do not think their numbers are accurate. There is total cap for each team of 188,200,000 for each team according to over the cap. Miami stands at 172,590,759 which leaves roughly 15 million for spending. If they cut Tannehill post June 1, they will save $18 million in cap space and there will be a dead cap of $7.6 million. Cutting Sitton will save $5 million in cap space with a dead cap hit of $2 million. Branch = $7 million in cap savings with a $2 million dead cap hit. Cutting Parking will be a savings of $9.3 million in cap space with no dead money. The other name I see out there in the forum is Amendola which is a $6 million cap savings with no dead money (these are all post June 1st numbers). With just those players they would create $45 million in cap space for a total of $54 million in cap with $13.5 million in dead money. That may seem like a decent amount but when you compare our team (4th worse team in cap space) to the Colts who are 1st in cap space with $106 million in cap space and 1.2 million in dead money (we are the worse team in the terms of dead money), it is not so rosey.

This is another reason this team needs to bottom out, finances are terrible. The good news is we have a much better financial picture especially with smart contract restructures and logical player cuts.

As they embark on their rebuilding project, the Dolphins not only need to add players at various positions but also clear out considerable cap space.

According to the NFL Players Association, the Dolphins have just $5.9 million in cap space for next season after several low-money signings during the past two months, including veteran defensive end Tank Carradine, quarterback Jake Rudock and cornerback Dee Delaney. That $5.9 million would barely be enough to sign a draft class, let alone anything else.

In most cases, the Dolphins will carve out more space by releasing players, such as Andre Branch. In some cases, they first will try to trade players, as the Dolphins have been doing with quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Detail below- apparently they are planning on moving on from Sitton

I liked what I saw of Sitton, unfortunately, he has an injury history and we got burnt signing him. I would'nt take the chance.

Regardless of how much cap space we have or don't have, Tbaum and company gave out some crazy contracts to players that hadn't earned them and now it's hurting us and of course you have a guy like Jones with a dead money hit of over 23mill if we were to cut him. It has been one bad deal after the other ever since he came to Miami. So glad he's gone.

I miss Dawn Aponte......

She was the best thing going in the front office. She could stretch a buck and knew how to keep the contracts competitive without mortgaging the future. She got caught up in that whole power struggle that resulted in Tannebaum being promoted to VP. I think they butted heads and she was viewed as a threat to Tannebaum.

That is correct

Luckily he is Arizona’s problem now.

I was under the impression Miami had 16 mil available after cutting Branch.

Its just all in flux, rap reported Branch was getting released, maybe he hasn’t been officially released just yet so Jackson has him counting against the cap.

I think we got a much better pucture in about another week, were going to have money in the end, not that we’re going to be big players in FA anyway.. unless you believe the flowers rumors
