So Feeley has outperformed Gus Frerotte through the preseason, huh? It's funny how one good game for Feeley brings out the best exaggerations in people. Let me take you through their performances, and then we'll summarize things nicely for you. Below I have account of both QBs' performances, as well as how many drives they led, how many offensive non-quarterback penalties they had to deal with, how many touchdown drives they led and how many field goal drives they led.
Gus Frerotte:
11/17, 143, 1td, 0int......3 drives, 2 penalties, 1 TD drive, 1 FG drive
6/14, 51, 0td, 0int.......4 drives, 2 penalties, 0 TD drive, 1 FG drive
7/18, 87, 0td, 0int.......7 drives, 2 penalties, 0 TD drive, 0 FG drive
9/25, 103, 0td, 1int........8 drives, 3 penalties, 1 TD drive, 0 FG drive
A.J. Feeley:
4/7, 35, 0td, 0int.......3 drives, 0 penalties, 0 TD drive, 0 FG drive
6/13, 60, 0td, 1int........6 drives, 0 penalties, 0 TD drive, 0 FG drive
16/20, 90, 0td, 0int.......5 drives, 1 penalty, 0 TD drive, 0 FG drive
8/14, 90, 1td, 0int........5 drives, 3 penalties, 1 TD drive, 1 FG drive
And so, to summarize.
Frerotte went a total of 33 of 74, 384 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT for a QB rating of 59.74 which is uninspiring to say the least. He had to deal with 9 offensive penalties ranging from false starts to holding to illegal formation etc, and he led the dolphins on 2 TD drives and 2 FG drives (20 points) in a total of 22 offensive drives, 20 of them against the other team's first string defense. Not very stellar.
Feeley went a total of 34 of 54, 275 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT for a QB rating of 74.2, which is much more respectable. He dealt with a total of 4 offensive penalties, but only led the Dolphins on 1 TD drive, and 1 FG drive (10 points) in a total of 19 drives, only 3 of which came against the first string defense.
Saban was right. Whoever went against the 2nd string defense has come out with the better stats. So, that means that they go with the guy who has shown the most in practice and has gotten the most loyalty from the offensive players. That is, without a doubt, hands down Gus Frerotte.
I mean seriously, AJ Feeley hadn't led the offense on a SINGLE scoring drive before tonight, and tonight he scored those 10 points against the Bucs' second and third string defenses. Do you know what players were in the Bucs' secondary when AJ scored all 10 of his points? Lets see, Ronyell Whitaker, Kalvin Pearson, and Blue Adams. Anyone heard of any of them?
To me, the opening drive of the most meaningful preseason game of the entire preseason showed me which guy should be our starting quarterback, and which guys should be our starting offensive line.
