2:20 p.m. Dolphins injury update

‏@OmarKelly Joe Philbin won't disclose why Chris McCain was absent. He doesn't have to today.

This doesn't sound very good.

interesting that philbin said that 5-2 look in the opener was a package they had worked on and not out of necessity...i would think that would be a sirens going off to to run right at us but i bet a safety was awfully close to the los in it...

Why, the 5-2 is basically the 3-4 especially with our ends.

And if we are still hurting at LB when Jordan gets back, 5-2 w him and Wake on the bookends seems solid to me

Lot of injuries all over the NFL in just 1 week. Wow. 18 game season my ass.

Both the 3-4 and the 4-3 came out of the 5-2. The 4-3 is usually credited to Tom Landry -- then the D coordinator of the Giants, who realized his nose tackle (Sam Huff) was athletic enough to stand up and play a little farther back. I think Landry actually called it the "flex" defense but it's the 4-3. The 3-4 originally grew more in popularity in the AFL, but it also comes from the 5-2 where instead of moving the nose tackle you move the two defensive tackles to linebacker and vice versa, and the two defensive ends (usually one more than the other) can play linebacker. I think the AFL Chiefs were only of the early adopters. They realized that Buck Buchanon was athletic enough to rush and to drop back, setting the stage for players like Ted Hendricks and our own Bob Matheson (of the eponymous "53 defense").

What's actually more crucial than 3-4 versus 4-3 is whether the players are two gapping or one gapping. There are variants of the 3-4 that are more like what we think of the 4-3 being than even some true 4-3 teams. And there are hybrids now, too. Seattle's defense -- which has now been adopted by Jacksonville -- uses one gapping and two gapping players in the same front.

My hope is that Misi can play this week or next. He got hurt at the 6:40 mark when Ellerbe rolled into him, but he stay out and played 2 or 3 more plays until the pats scored before coming out of the game. We was limping bad but he stayed in, so maybe that is a good sign he will be back fairly soon.

Joe Philbin never talks about players not at practice...

#Dolphins LB Chris McCain was out with an illness today so doesn't sound like you have to worry about him missing Bills game.

I hope it's an actual illness and not the same "illness" as when they originally said Jonathan Martin was out with an "illness."
