Pick your two strongest candidates and one darkhorse candidate that was not selected in the 1st round for each award....

Offensive Rookie of the Year:

Trent Richardson

Andrew Luck

Alshon Jeffery (darkhorse)

Defensive Rookie of the Year:

Luke Kuechly

Nick Perry

Lavonte David (darkhorse)

Offensive ROY:

1. Andrew Luck
2. Doug Martin
3. Robert Turbin (dark horse) -- Jeffery is probably the better pick, but what the hell.

Defensive ROY:

1. Luke Keuchly
2. Melvin Ingram
3. Courtney Upshaw (dark horse)

Offense - Griffin 111, Richardson, Alshon Jeffery

Defence - Claiborne, Ingram, Zach Brown

Offensive ROY:

1. Andrew Luck
2. Doug Martin
3. Robert Turbin (dark horse) -- Jeffery is probably the better pick, but what the hell.

Defensive ROY:

Doug Martin is an excellent pick, I wanted to pick him myself.

But you couldn't very well not pick Richardson, lol. He's a strong candidate, obviously, but he also has two of the greatest run stopping defenses in the NFL in his division (with the third no slouch). There's a lot of hopes for Weeden, but I look at it and see a passing game's that going to struggle, especially initially, which is just going to make it harder to run. Weeden has a lot of ability but it's a huge transition from the Big 12 to the AFC North, and that's even if you're not relying on garbage like Travis Benjamin or unproven mediocrities like Mohammad Massaquoi and Greg Little to throw to. 1000 yards, 4 YPC and 6-8 TDs would be a great accomplishment for Richardson in that situation, but I'm not sure I buy it.

I also believe stylistically it's going to be more of a transition for Richardson than it would be for Martin. He's not going to be as physically dominant in the NFL as he was in the SEC. It could lead to injury at some point if he can't learn when to pick his spots better. Of course, they also said that about AP, but Richardson's not quite the specimen Peterson is, at least to me, or Earl Campbell was in his day. I haven't gone back and studied it but my guess would be that power backs tend to struggle more than elusive guys as rookies, for that reason. That ended up being the case in the Ronnie Brown/Cadillac Williams/Cedric Benson year, for sure.

Tampa by contrast has a weaker division and much better offensive talent. Martin I think has a good shot to have a Matt Forte-like rookie year, 1400-1700 yards from scrimmage and like 10 total TDs.

Not that it matters, though. Luck is winning ROY.

All good points except for he's a little more elusive than you think. Cam Newton, Julio Jones, and A.J. Green physically dominates NFL players, Trent can too. NFL defenses are full of players that wouldn't start on some the defenses these kids played against in the SEC. A lot of 'em haven't seen a back quite like Richardson. Missing time in the pre-season due to the knee scope, or lingering discomfort in the knee are probably the most significant two aspects that I can see holding him back, at least to begin the season. If he's healthy he'll be on the field all 3 downs early because he's such a complete back, and he'll be a key in pass protection and picking up blitzes..... keeping Weeden off his back.

Doug Martin is as solid as they come though. He'll be in the mix.

The Carolina media was absolutely gushing over Kuechley during the first preseason game. I'll say Chandler Jones as a darkhorse.

Offensive I'll say either TRich, Luck or David Wilson.

How's Hightower looked for you guys? I hear Jones looks amazing but haven't heard much on Hightower.

On a somewhat related note Courtney Upshaw, who many saw as a steal for the Ravens, has been a huge disappointment thus far in camp.

You failed to read the the first post correctly. The third choice cannot be a 1st round pick.
