2015 NFL Draft Prospects

C Joe Townsend, Vanderbilt 6-3 308lbs.

154272690-joe-townsend-of-the-vanderbilt-commodores-gettyimages.jpg

STRENGTHS: Townsend possesses a square frame and exhibits good power to generate a push at the line of scrimmage. He's stout in pass protection, anchoring well due to his thick build, balance and technique. Townsend plays on the balls of his feet and with good knee bend and can shuffle laterally to mirror. He's alert, often extending one arm to shield a defender while keeping his head on a swivel for others coming.
WEAKNESSES: While possessing some of the key components needed to make it as a center in the NFL, Townsend doesn't show ideal quickness or body control -- deficiencies that show up occasionally in pass protection and when asked to adjust in space run-blocking at the second level.
OUTLOOK:Townsend isn't a fit for every team. His limited agility could make him a liability in a zone-based scheme. His power and durability, however, would appear to fit in well with the principles coach Derek Mason schemed against each day of practice at Stanford. Mastering a new scheme and maintaining his reputation as one of the grittiest centers in college football, Townsend could earn Day Three consideration.

OG Shaquille Mason Georgia Tech 6-1 300lbs

Strengths
One of the most powerful drive blockers in the 2015 draft. Comes off ball with low pad level and wide base and routinely wins leverage game. Snaps hips under him at contact, standing defensive tackles up. Runs feet through contact, looking to bury his man. Salty and tough. Strength is his calling card. Moves well in space and climbs to second level under control. Able to sustain blocks for several yards downfield when his balance is right. Good knee bend in pass sets with ability to mirror. Keeps weight balanced throughout pass set with desired posture. Above-average hand fighter in pass pro and able to reset hands when they are knocked away.
Weaknesses
Short guard with short arms. Lets his hands get a little wide in pass sets, making his lack of length more distressing. Takes inconsistent angles to targets on zone runs, causing him to fall off of some blocks. Forward-leaner susceptible to balance issues at contact. Inconsistent with cut blocks, despite high number attempted at Georgia Tech. Rarely asked to sustain pass protection very long. Faced very few skilled interior pass rushers.
Bottom Line
Powerful player with an ability to drive defenders off their spot with leg drive and then torque and finish with strong hands and upper body. Lack of height and arm length could hurt his draft standing a little bit, but his elite power trait as run blocker and solid pass-protection technique make him a future starter at right guard in the NFL.

Couldn't have put it better myself. He's got that wide base, great punch and combative nature that I liked about Brian Schwenke a couple of years back, who's a solid player but has been unlucky with uinjuries. It's true Mason's cut blocking is erratic, but I hate cut blocking in general so I forgive him for it! Why you would want a devastating second level blocker lying on the ground, I don't know. He's being tried at center in evaluations, but this guy is good enough to play guard at a high level in the NFL, imo. He wins off the snap with speed, punch and power, so making him be the guy who snaps it first is negating some of his appeal, I think. You want him firing out of the cannon from the right guard spot.

OT Sean Hickey, Syracuse 6-5 309lbs.

STRENGTHS: Solidly put-together with adequate height and build. Light feet and natural flexibility, not playing stiff. Sets up quickly and gets into position, squaring and staying alert with controlled movements.
Patient off the snap and mirrors well with consistent marriage between his footwork and eye use. Improved base, digging his cleats in to anchor, extending and using his strong hands and wrists to absorb contact. Good snatch and release in space to avoid holding calls. Mobile with no issues getting to the second level. Utilizes angles and anticipates well as he's not often fooled by extra pressures, picking up blitzes quickly pre and post snap.
Comfortable and confident playing demeanor. Hard worker with a professional approach to the game. NFL-ready and high effort player, on and off the field. Experienced at left and right tackle, starting 38 straight games to finish his college career.
WEAKNESSES: Average body type with short arms and limited power potential. Lacks brute strength and not a violent point of attack player. Needs to develop his core strength. Not overpowering in space and needs to load more ammo into his punch. Too easy for blockers to drive him on his heels when blockers have access to his body.
On the ground too much on tape and clearly best in smaller areas when not caught overextended, limiting his versatility on the edges. Needs to flash more of a mean streak and add more glass to his diet. Started every game the past three seasons, but his durability needs vetted after tearing a ligament in both knees in 2011.
Inexperienced inside at guard, his most likely NFL position.

DT Carl Davis, Iowa 6-5 320lbs.

Davis#71

STRENGTHS: Excellent blend of size, strength and athleticism. Plays with excellent base strength and isn't an easy player to move, handling double-teams well and not allowing himself to be swallowed up by blockers.
Has a strong upper body to stack-and-shed with power to control blocks and force the issue, showing accurate hand placement to latch-and-toss. He is surprisingly light on his feet, closing quickly when he locates and has a lane.
WEAKNESSES: While Davis looks overpowering, too often he plays small. More of a short-area defender with only average body control and redirection technique and while he shows good knee bend and flexibility, he often struggles with leverage issues. Bad habit of standing up, negating his power and getting pushed back.
Compares To: Domata Peko, Bengals - Like Peko, Davis is ideally-suited as a one-technique tackle with the power to handle double-teams and the quickness to penetrate the backfield or make plays away from the line of scrimmage.

DE Anthony Chickillo, Miami 6-3 267lbs.

STRENGTHS: Thickly put-together and works hard in the weight room to maximize his growth potential. Strong upper body to bully and get blockers on their heels. Anchors well at the point of attack with a stout lower body and consistent leverage. Plays with some natural knee flexibility with the lateral quickness at the line of scrimmage to avoid blocks and find vacated gaps. Coordinated footwork to maneuver in small spaces and get upfield. Keeps his eyes elevated to follow the ball and get his hands up to occasionally knock down passes. Physical mitts to latch and lock out. Hustler with a consistent motor, keeping the switch flipped on. Warrior mentality, playing through pain and fighting throughout all four quarters. Lives in the weight room with NFL work ethic. Football bloodlines - father (Tony) and grandfather (Nick) were both drafted out of Miami (Fla.) and played in the NFL. Durable and reliable, starting the final 47 games of his career.
WEAKNESSES: Bulky frame, but lacks ideal arm length. Not a quick-twitch or sudden athlete and needs to better control his movements to eliminate wasted steps. Plays fast, but needs to stay controlled and do a better job breaking down in space to be a more consistent finisher. Lacks ideal hip flexibility with only one speed and ordinary closing burst. His stops away from the line of scrimmage are based on his hustle, not athletic range. Limited repertoire of pass rush moves and isn't the type of end who will frequently get his shoulder past the shoulder of edge blockers. Needs to add more tricks to his arsenal. Aggressive hands, but needs to be more effective using them. Tracks the play well, but needs to better anticipate and often seems a step late in pursuit of the play. Minor knee injury (Nov. 2014), but didn't miss any time. Limited position versatility on tape. Below average production for a four-year starter.

love Chickillo.

He's so versatile, very smart player, has power, burst, effort. He's a guy you could do a lot with in your roster and is a decent end in his own right. Strangely used by Golden in UM.

I think he's a sleeper pick we should strongly consider in the 4th.

OLB Mike Hull, Penn St. 6-0 237lbs.

STRENGTHS: Balanced movements to break down on the move and stay under control with no wasted steps. Arrives with pop and doesn't shy from contact, attacking the teeth of an offense with his physical demeanor (high school wrestler). Takes on blocks well and puts himself in position to make plays, working off contact and swarming to the ball. Aggressive angles and understands the quickest route to his target. Highly active, making it tough to eliminate him from plays. Quick to diagnose and read/react, trusting his instincts and vision. Reads his keys and gets defenders into position pre-snap. Nice job in the open field to make stops. Hard-nosed and intense, never avoiding contact. Shows anticipation skills in coverage with ballskills to make plays. Emotional leader and a football lifer, living for the game with a contagious passion. Above average on-field production as a starter and defensive team MVP in 2014. Football bloodlines - his father (John) was a linebacker at Penn State (1971-73) and was selected in the 1974 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
WEAKNESSES: Lacks ideal size/strength for the NFL and can be overwhelmed by blockers in the open field and at the line of scrimmage. Shorter than ideal arms, causing him to slide off tacklers. Not a twitchy mover and shows some body stiffness. Only average athleticism and lacks multiple gears. Caught flat-footed in space and will bite on fakes, vacating the middle of the field. Will play too fast at times and overrun some angles. Shed technique needs refined and sometimes unnecessarily attacks blocks. Durability concerns after missing two games and parts of others with a knee injury (Sept. 2013) - also had a knee scope Jan. 2015 that sidelined him for the Senior Bowl.

ILB Jeff Luc, Cincinnati 6-0 263lbs.

STRENGTHS: Built like a Sherman tank with a compact, heavily-muscled frame that stood out even amongst the best-built players at the Senior Bowl. Quick to read run, attacking would-be blockers with a physical pop to disengage and make plays in the hole. Physical enough to potentially play inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Possesses 32" arms, which help him keep blockers from latching onto him. Shows some lateral quickness and flexibility to slip by blockers, surprising opponents gearing up for collisions. Has a short area burst to close, exploding into ball-carriers with enough force to knock the ball free (six forced fumbles in 2014) and shows excellent strength and hand-eye coordination to rip the ball free. Improved awareness in coverage in 2014. Took his game to another level as a senior, providing evidence that his best football may still be ahead of him.
WEAKNESSES: Strictly a two-down run-stuffer at the next level. Possesses less-than-ideal fluidity and straight-line speed for coverage responsibilities, perhaps in part because of his muscle-bound frame, which leaves him a stiff and lacking change of direction skills. Lacks the preferred speed to the perimeter and is too often beaten to the edge by backs. Only one season of impressive production at the collegiate level.
