2015 NFL Draft Prospects

Rowe has stone hands. You just have to accept that and move on from there. It's why I think - despite being a fan - he's in danger of being over-drafted on this wave of Shermanoid CBs. In the third he was good value. The talk now has him creeping up to high second and at that spot you'd want him to be hauling in more INTs than he does, esp if you move him back to free safety.

I agree that the 3rd is where he should be picked. But like you say, he will probably be over drafted. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, if he was not 5-9 and the knee injury, is a 1st rd talent. If he drops to the 3rd, I would jump all over him.

QB Cole Stoudt, Clemson 6-4 218lbs.

WR Phillip Dorsett, Miami 5-10 185lbs.

STRENGTHS: Possesses true "see-ya" speed with easy acceleration to turn on the jets and erase pursuit angles from defenders and he should be a prime candidate for the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine. Explosive playmaker with his natural speed and ability to create after the catch.
Shows the ability to make an impact at all levels of the field, also helping out on special teams as a return man. Has terrific body control and tracks the ball well downfield.
WEAKNESSES: Undersized at just 5-9, lacking ideal size and strength for the next level. Has struggled throughout his career with easy drops in important situations. Pre-draft testing will be important to gauge whether Dorsett lost any of his trademark speed due to partial tear of MCL in 2013.

RB Javorius Allen, USC 6-0 221lbs.

Strengths
Loose hips for tight turns and razor-sharp cuts. Has quick-stop, jump-cut ability to make defenders miss in the backfield. Can slalom back and forth, navigating around traffic through the line of scrimmage and into the second level. Able to shake linebackers and downhill safeties in space. Short-area acceleration to give leg-tacklers a vanishing target. Has lateral quickness to bounce runs outside and create something out of nothing. Factors into passing game, averaging 11.3 yards per catch over last two seasons. Plays with adequate burst through the crease. Able to handle a heavy workload if asked.
Weaknesses
Running style doesn't match his size. Upright runner. Plays with high pad level and doesn't finish runs with attitude and urgency. Slows feet into contact and rarely explodes through initial tackler with force. Lacks instincts and feel for developing running lanes. Chooses the trafficked path more than expected. At times, will show some indecisiveness and hesitation into the fray. Will break prematurely from path the play should follow rather than allowing it to develop. Focus drops plagued him out of backfield in 2014.
NFL Comparison
Bernard Pierce
Bottom Line
Workhorse back able to make plays late in the game and work out of the backfield to keep defenses honest. His relative elusiveness in space and ability to cut on a dime give him the ability to create yards where there are none, but his average vision and inability to finish off runs will keep him from getting some of the yards teams might expect. He's well-rounded enough to be a very good backup with middle- of-the-road starting potential.

TE A.J. Derby, Arkansas 6-4 255lbs.

Strengths
Big, physical and fast. Athletic in space with ability to create some separation out of breaks. Has speed after catch in open field. Posted impressive 54-yard touchdown catch and run against Alabama secondary that struggled to catch him. Can line up all over the field. Natural pass-catcher. Had only one drop during 2014 season. Showed willingness to catch throws over the middle and take the punishment. Unique perspective after playing quarterback and linebacker before move to tight end. Ability to add roster depth at two positions as emergency quarterback. Comes from football bloodlines. Father and uncle had stops in the NFL and his brother lettered at Iowa.
Weaknesses
Has only one year of tight end experience. Routes have very little polish to them. He needs time to learn the nuances of position. Run blocking very much a work in progress. Uses poor hand placement and fails to sustain blocks when in-line. Balance at contact needs to improve when blocking in spaces. Has habit of using one rather than two hands for difficult catches. Was unable to play in final game (Texas Bowl) due to knee injury and continues to heal.
NFL Comparison
Vance McDonald
Bottom Line
Despite spending only one season at tight end, has the size and tools to become a move tight end who creates matchup issues for defenses. His draft value could be held down due to his lack of experience and below average in-line blocking, but combination of size and play speed should be intriguing to NFL teams.

C Shane McDermott, Miami 6-4 302lbs.

mcdermott.jpg

STRENGTHS: As with most centers, McDermott makes up for his overall lack of athleticism by showing a mostly aggressive demeanor; multiple times can be seen playing through the whistle. Does a good job identifying what the defense is trying to do, and sets the blocking assignments with relative ease. Keeps his head on a swivel, looking for any potential threats he may encounter.
Pretty good functional strength; can at times create movement in the running game. Though he has shown some susceptibility to bull-rushes, he typically does a pretty good job from a technique standpoint. Was not asked to pull in any of the games that I viewed, and at times struggled with hitting moving targets if he was caught flat-footed.
WEAKNESSES: McDermott's biggest problem is that he is not the biggest, nor the most athletic. Can at times really struggle with power; has exceptional technique when dealing with this, but still finds himself on skates. He also doesn't move the best laterally, and this would give pause for concern moving to guard. Was beat with quickness across his face on numerous occasions when studying him. This lack of positional versatility may ultimately be his undoing.

OG Tyler Moore, Florida 6-5 325lbs.

STRENGTHS: Naturally large man with a well-proportioned frame, long, thick limbs and a big bubble. Can create movement in the running game. Good hand placement, core flexibility and leg drive for a power scheme. Inconsistent with his pad level but anchors well due to his mass and power and should be able to improve in this area with some position stability. Offers positional flexibility; experienced at all four exterior positions. Has the intelligence to handle converting to center. Untapped potential could be tapped if allowed to focus on one position.
WEAKNESSES: Possesses heavy feet and doesn't re-direct easily, making him a tough fit in a zone-blocking scheme. Struggled with speed rushers when operating at tackle. Lacks agility and quickness to handle the edge. Extends his arms to "catch" defensive linemen, leaving him vulnerable to holding calls. Elbow injury suffered in 2013 requires a close medical examination.

OT Tyrus Thompson, Oklahoma 6-5 324lbs.

STRENGTHS: Thick lower half and tree trunks for thighs. Good initial quickness, agility and balance for his size. Improved functional strength as a senior, playing with better knee-bend and patience than he did as a part-time starter. Long arms and broad frame effective in running game and pass pro. Extensive experience at the left tackle position against some of the nation's elite pass rushers in the Big 12.
WEAKNESSES: Lacks overwhelming strength and is too easily bullied on his heels, not effectively extending and utilizing his reach. Might be the ideal right tackle and NFL speed could be an issue. Tends to get grabby with late hands and reactions. Must eliminate mental mistakes to be a consistent edge blocker.

DT Kaleb Eulls, Mississippi St. 6-3 305lbs.

STRENGTHS: Well-proportioned with long arms (33 1/2"), thick thighs and a big bubble. Functional strength to hold up at the point of attack. Can stack and shed blockers. Good lateral agility and balance for a man of his size. Flows down the line in pursuit, keeping his feet and showing a burst to close when the ball is near. Latches on to the ballcarrier and has good strength for the drag-down tackle.
Highly regarded off the field, as well as on it. Graduated with a degree in interdisciplinary studies in December of 2014. Received national praise as an 18-year old for disarming a gunman on a school bus full of students.
WEAKNESSES: Lacks ideal quickness off the ball. Has a tendency to stand up at the snap, losing leverage and negating his own strength. Doesn't show much flexibility to "get skinny" to split gaps, limiting his pass-rush potential. Recorded just 4.0 sacks over his career, three of which came during his senior season.

DE Cedric Reed, Texas 6-5 269lbs.

STRENGTHS: Well-built frame with good length. Attacks with his hands, staying low to get underneath. Adequate awareness and contains as a run defender. Assignment sound and disciplined. Tough-minded to absorb contact and do the dirty work. Special teams experience, playing on punt coverage even as a senior. Hardworking and humble teammate with a grounded personality. Good numbers on paper with 32 starts, 37.0 tackles for loss and 18.0 sacks at Texas.
WEAKNESSES: Not as powerful as he looks with limited flexibility and choppy movements, unbalanced footwork. Not a dynamic athlete. Easily slowed down and struggles to sift through the crowd. Undisciplined vision and anticipation, losing contain with his eyes in the wrong place. Streaky finisher. Underwent surgery in January 2015 to repair a torn meniscus in his knee.

OLB Zach Hodges, Harvard 6-2 250lbs.

STRENGTHS: Lines up all over the defensive line for Harvard, inside and outside, and also stands up to drop and play on his feet.
Hodges has an excellent first step with instant acceleration and nonstop momentum towards the ball, taking sharp angles with perceptive vision. He plays with low pad level and natural leverage to power through the line of scrimmage while staying balanced through contact.
Motor is much more of a positive than a negative, using his relentless mentality and active playing style to only be blocked for so long.
WEAKNESSES: Lean-limbed frame, lacking ideal bulk. Hodges tends to be overaggressive and needs to control his energy to consistently break down and not wear himself out. Like most college rushers, he has room to improve his hand use and pass rush repertoire, but Hodges is still in the learning stages of his development and has a long ways to go before hitting his ceiling.
Admits he needs to work on defeating double teams and chips.

ILB A.J. Johnson, Tennessee 6-2 242lbs.

STRENGTHS: Unlike most inside linebackers who possess a compact, muscled-up frame, Johnson is a bit lanky. Like his athletic build suggests, Johnson is quick and he can slither past would-be blockers to make tackles in the hole.
With greater upper body strength in 2014, Johnson could boost his stock. He has just enough speed to meet backs at the edge and is fluid enough to handle coverage responsibilities. Perhaps Johnson's greatest skill is his heavy-hitting as a tackler. He has a nice closing burst to gather momentum and consistently delivers the emphatic pop that has no doubt helped him build his all-conference reputation.
WEAKNESSES: He is reliant on beating blockers to the action because he struggles to disengage once they latch on, showing only average power and technique for the position. Worse, Johnson often drops his head on contact, losing sight of the ball.
Johnson's talent has been clear since his freshman season and his production speaks for itself. He isn't the clean NFL projection that his reputation might lead you to believe, however, and also comes with some off-field baggage. He was arrested February 8, 2014 for purchasing alcohol for a minor and resisting arrest.

CB Craig Mager, Texas St. 5-11 201lbs.

Strengths: Started all four years. Plays with excellent fire and motor throughout the game. Loves to hit. Quick-twitch athlete with plus play strength and sudden change of direction. Desired closing burst and drives through receivers, attempting to jar ball free. Feet rarely stall and has NFL ability to click and close on throws. Adequate mirror and match in man coverage. Explosive leaper who climbs ladder and has timing to attack the ball at high-point. Able to return punts. Was one of the standouts among cornerbacks at East-West Shrine Game practices.
Weaknesses: Instincts are average. Wants to see it first rather than anticipating. Allows too much separation in space. Can do a better job of constricting passing windows and taking a few more chances from thirds coverage. Excitable in man coverage and will become overly aggressive. Questionable long speed. Tries to stay on top of route rather than trusting feet and remaining patient. Gets caught committing too quickly to first move.
Sources Tell Us: "I wanted to make him a safety because of how physical he is, but after seeing him in person, he may not be big enough. He's not as fast as you want, but he's a player and he's really, really tough." -- NFC director of player personnel
NFL Comparison: Bene' Benwikere
Bottom Line: Productive, consistent four-year starter who plays with the aggressiveness and competitiveness that defensive coordinators will love. Mager has the twitch to close quickly on throws underneath and leaping ability to challenge jump balls. Teams question his ability to carry deep speed, which could impact his draft standing, but his talent and makeup give him a shot at becoming an NFL starter.

SS James Sample, Louisville 6-2 209lbs.

STRENGTHS: Looks the part of an NFL safety with broad shoulders, long limbs and a thicker build than his listed size suggests. Uses his length and strength effectively to fight through blocks near the line of scrimmage and catch ballcarriers, showing enough power and grit to drag them to the ground. Good hand-eye coordination and timing to compete for 50-50 balls. Shows good hands to pluck the ball outside of his frame.
WEAKNESSES: Tight in the hips and bends at the waist (rather than the knees), which limits his ability to change directions quickly, leaving him vulnerable to cut-backs in the open field and fluid receivers. Does not possess ideal acceleration to recover if beaten initially and may lack the straight-line necessary for man coverage duties against NFL-caliber wideouts. Too often catches ball-carriers, rather than delivering blows. Only one season of significant FBS experience and was surrounded by a talent. Some questions of maturity, competitiveness and commitment to the team given his three-team journey and early entry into the NFL.
