It honestly surprises me that Gruden has stayed away from the game as long as he has. I'd like to see him back in the NFL.

I have been beating the drum of experience, but at the same time, I think we are being to simplistic by thinking we will be fine with an experienced hand while at the same time we will have Philbin with an inexperienced coach.
According to Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Daily News, citing a league source, reports that former Buccaneers HC Jon Gruden has informed Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie, through an intermediary, that he is interested in their head-coaching vacancy.
Domowitch’s source added that Lurie likes and respects Gruden, but still has reservations about his willingness “to play nice” with executive Howie Roseman.
However, Gruden has reportedly told people that working with Roseman wouldn’t be an issue.
Even so, Lurie and the Eagles are reportedly focused on other coaching candidates with the option of getting in touch with Gruden, should they be underwhelmed, left as a possibility.
Actually no.....I don't think it is too simplistic. The odds of success with an experienced coach, and in Shanahan's case a Superbowl winning coach, are greater in my opinion than a first time head coach. That doesn't mean that all previous head coaches will be successful nor does it mean all first time coaches will be unsuccessful......it is just my opinion that an experienced coach gives us a better shot. I think you are the one being simplistic in how your interpret other peoples comments.
You post that Shanahan is being overrated. He has coached 3 NFL teams and has 2 superbowls on his resume. Gase has what? Our organization is a mess, our coaching staff needs to mostly be entirely replaced, including both the offensive and defensive coordinators and our front office is suspect at best. I don't think we are overrating Shanahan's experience at all.......he can probably deal with what I just described. Putting an untested first time coordinator in that same situation as head coach is going to take a very special person to be successful. So based on that, I think an experienced older hand has a better shot at putting it all together. That is my rationale. Hue Jackson, has also done it before. Not to Shanahan's experience, but he has been a head coach and run a team as the top guy.....that is better than never having done it at all.

If the odd are going to increase with an experienced coach like Shanahan...a Super Bowl winning coach are greater...then why did he flameout in Washington?
Mike Shanahan has been as productive as the Dolphins have been in this past century.

Mike Shanahan since 1998: 14 seasons, 6 playoff games, 1 playoff W's. Miami Dolphins since 1998: 17 seasons, 6 playoff games, 2 playoff W's
Again, I think he can coach, but I am not sure he is a sure bet like people are making him.

I am with you on the experience factor. I DO think it is important. However, Gase is not Joe Philbin. I think he will find success. Also, Teryl Austin is going to be a HR for someone at some point.
It is all about the right fit.
Howard Eskin was able to get a response from Jon Gruden regarding the report that he’s expressed interest in the Eagles’ head-coaching job.
“I’m not interested,” Gruden tells Eskin.

Sometimes when you do a lot of interviews you end up hiring the last guy you do OR you do some one from the start.
I have predicted Gase the entire time, but I wonder if they wind back to Mike Smith. He checks a lot of boxes they are looking for and he got an early interview.
Weren't Armstrong and Bowles together in Miami as well for a few seasons ?
Again, I think you are missing the point (not trying to be rude). It isn't just the previous winning that is a factor, it is the experience of running the team and being able to replace the coaching staff and deal with the front office that makes me want experience. The connections within the league to draw in coaching talent and the ability to say no to the executives when needed. This is also what experience brings to the table.
All coaches end up leaving or getting fired. It even ran out for Don Shula at some point.....Landry eventually was let go, Knolls...etc.....and if I need to tell you the issues Shanahan in Washington....really.....the owner forcing the drafting of RGIII, giving up their future to do it, Donovan McNabb, Albert Haynesworth........you know this stuff already.
In other words none of us have a clue yet who will be hired.
