Who Do You NOT Want to Win the Super Bowl?

The Patriots were certainly deserving of being in the playoffs. They finished the season 4th in the league in YPPA Differential, the old standby Bud Goode category of offensive passing proficiency in relation to pass defense proficiency. I keep an eye on that stat all season because it tends to identify the eventual playoff teams, no matter what it looks like subjectively. And it held up again this season. The top 11 teams in YPPA Differential made the playoffs. The only two fraud playoff teams were the Titans and Steelers, both with -0.5 net.

The Chiefs are an interesting case because Mahomes dropped way down this season in YPA to 7.3 and also their pass defense declined somewhat from 2020. It equated to a dead even YPPA of 0.0. Basically the Chiefs have become lazier and lazier during the Mahomes era. Their YPPA Differential was very good but not great during 2018 and 2019. Near the top. But once they won the Super Bowl and realized Mahomes could carry them when it mattered the week to week intensity level has fallen way off. They dropped below +1.0 in YPPA Differential last season and now to 0.0 this year. I'm not going to condemn them for it. That organization realizes an ultra elite quarterback scores points in bunches when it matters, covering up everything else.

Lots of teams bunched between +1.0 and +1.9 this season. Those are unremarkable numbers. Previously there were dominant teams in the +3.0 range. The 2019 49ers were the most recent overall excellent team in the NFL, with YPPA Differential of +2.5:

Good stat. We were almost exactly average in YPPA. diff. (ever so slightly below avg.), which was one of the few overall team stats that was better this year than last. DVOA, Avg. Point differential, YPP differential, and others were better last year. I think our pass rush was better this year, as was Tua (at least a bit?) - which made up for Fitz's massive advantage over Brisket.
