The 3-4 is IMO a better D scheme b/c it is more difficult for the O to figure out who is coming on the rush. It is more susceptible to the inside rush but in the NFL most teams pass more often than they run. It is also a very successful D. The Steelers are always one of the best Ds and the Patriots won a SuperBowl using a combo of both the 4-3 and 3-4 (although in the games I watched they used the 3-4 more often). Currently more teams use a 4-3 but like everything in the NFL its cyclical. The 3-4 used to be the predominant D. A few years ago only 1 or 2 teams used a 3-4, now the list is up to 7. Eventually, it will swing back all the way and the 3-4 will be predominant again.
Having said all that, Miami's personnel is more suited for a 4-3. We have an abundance of DL and few LBs. Wanny is a former DL and seems most comfortable coaching and recognizing talent on the DL.
