There are alot of people getting on Sparano over this game, but I believe this play call deserves its own thread.

Let's analyze the situation here.

3rd and literally 3-4 inches at the NYJ 41 yard line. You are playing a jets defense who has struggled against the run all year, and has a great pass defense. Your quarterback is Matt Moore, who is by from a top tier QB. The success rate of picking up the first down with the QB sneak is conservatively 90% with the distance that needed to be gained. Passing roughly 50%. If the first down is picked up only 6-8 more yards need to picked up to give Carpenter a chance for a FG that he would make more times than not.

The playcall is a conventional pass- incomplete. Sparano then decides to punt with inches to go @NYJ41 yard line. Why throw the ball with inches to go at the jets41 if you're going to punt the ball? Great punt, but sequence of events is beyond beyond mind boggling.

This is not about being an armchair quarterback, anyone who is relatively good at math knows the play call didn't give them the highest probability to succeed.

Flat out mind-boggling.

I didn't mind the play call - the play was there for the taking but Moore didn't see the RB that was open short for a first down. Instead he threw deep and incomplete. The times the Jets knew we were running they mostly stuffed us. This line just can't seem to get any push or create holes. The majority of good runs by Bush were designed to go between the tackles and he bounced it outside. Good runs by Thomas were all effort on his part as he was often met in the backfield.

you got hilliard in the flat wide *** open but moore never comes off an earlier read to his check down ie hilliard and tries to hit gates on revis...bad decision

for some reason attack revis was on the menu today and thats playing with poison i can tell ya that...

but moore also missed a crossing and i mean wide *** open charles clay in the red zone just didn't let the play develop enough...but i guess given the way we protect the passer in the red thats what should be expected of a first game starter

****ty coaching, ****ty QB, ****ty team. To analyze it any more than that is to overanalyze it, imo.

That set the tone of the game. I knew we were going to lose after that. UNBELIEVEABLE.

I had no problem with the play call if you plan on going for it on fourth down, (which they should have). If they were not going to go for it on fourth down, they should have just run a QB sneak on third down. The thing that makes me nuts and is the best evidence that this whole staff is clueless, is that they wouldn't go for it on fourth down. The team is 0-4, and they are all going to be fired so they really have nothing to lose, and Sparano decides to punt, even though the odds are heavily in your favor in making the first down on fourth and inches. I'm so sick of watching this regime. Who would have thought that this group would make you long for the Wannstedt -Spielman era?
