“Generally, football during Thanksgiving, you’re busy, even Christmas, there’s something going on,” defensive end Cameron Wake said. “Even New Year’s ... was it New Year’s Day we had a game? I’m not really thinking about that, I’m about football, whether it’s midweek, a football game. So July 4, you’re off, you can actually go home. You can have your family come. You can sit back and relax, and not have to worry about next Sunday. That’s always been one of the holidays that I’ve usually enjoyed, but the other major ones are generally overshadowed by your job.”

In the midst of their five-week break before the start of training camp, Dolphins players are scattered throughout the country with some even away from the United States on this Fourth of July.

Kicker Caleb Sturgis, for example, is in Cancun, Mexico, where on Saturday he will marry his longtime girlfriend Kimberly Davidson.

When he talked during minicamp about his Fourth of July plans, this is what he said: “Whatever they do in Cancun. I don’t know what they do there, but whatever it is, I’ll definitely celebrate the day.”
Here’s a sampling of what other Dolphins players had planned for the Fourth of July:

• Cornerback Jamar Taylor: “I got something cooked up right now; I won’t put it out there yet, though. Just being with friends, family, being with my girl. Just enjoy it.”

• Linebacker Danell Ellerbe: “My wife’s family goes to Myrtle Beach every year back home, take the kids out there to the ocean. This will be my first time going with my son, so it’ll be kind of special.”

• Linebacker Jason Trusnik: “Just (being) with family and going back home to Ohio and just see some family and friends.”

• Defensive tackle A.J. Francis: “On the Fourth of July I’ll be in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise.”

• Defensive tackle Earl Mitchell: “Just probably relax, maybe get some barbecue or something. I’m sure there’s some around here.”

CALEB STURGES.................. do you REALLY think that mexico celebrates AMERICAN independence day in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM? REALLY?

the 4th of july is NOT a world holliday like christmas. it's celebrating our INDEPENDENCE from BRITISH rule and oppression. mexico has NO reason to recognize it.

but, somehow, we here in the states have CINCO DI MAYO [may 5th, mexican independence from spain day] celebrations everywhere and our schools and the kids are forced to recognize it bringing out the MEXICAN FLAG with full honors.

but just because you have seen that done here, dont expect american independence day and the AMERICAN FLAG to be honored down there in mexico. maybe some tourist bar in cancun will have some bbq pork taco's with margurita's and little american flag drink stirrers to help bring in the american tourists, but that will be the some of it. no parade. no american flag with honor guard, no HUGE fireworks display with a 10ft tall UNCLE SAM walking around handing out flag pin's. no reading of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE in the park.

enjoy that south of the border 4th of july caleb. maybe think about being IN your country for it's INDEPENDENCE DAY and HONORING it here next year huh?

HAPPY 4TH TO ALL MY AMERICAN DOLPHIN FANS!!!!

Lol chill out, have a hotdog. Bring thst bloodpressure down its just a fluff piece on a website and a guy going on holiday

Lol chill out, have a hotdog. Bring thst bloodpressure down its just a fluff piece on a website and a guy going on holiday

i wouldnt expect a NON AMERICAN to understand. and thats not an insult at you.

and here is my issue U.K, it has become all about the hot dog and the beer and the kids fireworks and NO emphasis on what the day and the celebration are for.

it wasnt that long ago on 4th of july, you would see AMERICAN FLAGS on almost EVERY HOUSE and building that day. it is a rare occasion now. in my neighborhood yesterday, i rode around my neighborhood and MY house and ONE other flew the flag on their home and i am talking a good half mile square area. it made me sad. VERY sad. but, i saw lot's of cars and heard LOT'S of noise from the dozens of house's who were laughing and stuffing hot dogs and beer and blowing fireworks. all fine, but it was lack of the spirit and meaning was lost in it all.

caleb, [as well as so many younger american's], have no idea WHO and WHAT was all behind our declaration of INDEPENDENCE need to be educated and i am saddened when i see, the most important event in american history be so ignored and cheapened. it's not a slight to caleb but the over all lack of education of his country and celebration [shared by million's of others in america] that i brought to light. i hope EVERY AMERICAN will educate or RE educate themselves with american history and what it means to actually BE an american. he is in a FOREIGN country, asking for places in mexico to see firework's. do you not see anything odd in that on the 4th of july?? if that day is so important to caleb, maybe next year STAY AT HOME IN AMERICA FOR THE 4TH! PLAN A VACATION TO PHILADELPHIA OR BOSTON and visit the places our founding fathers hailed from and the things they did that shaped our country and began what was to become our INDEPENDENCE!! take family and friends along and have points of interest in american history to visit and learn about. then END THAT DAY with a trip to see an awsome fireworks show and lot's of tasty hot dog's and FLY AN AMERICAN FLAG, EVEN IF IT'S ONLY 3 INCHES TALL!! spending the 4th in a foreign country and wondering where the fireworks are is as far from the american independent spirit as you can get!!

the hot dog and fireworks should not serve as a distraction or refuge from it's meaning. this country's main problem is it citizen's know very little about their country and spend almost NO time learning about it [unless it's something dubbed as racist or imperialist or oppressive, etc....,]. the LAST thing americans need to do as of now is "chill and eat a hot dog". all that while our country crumble's around us. [see nero and rome!].

it's an american thing U.K.!! i dont expect you to understand it, or it's meaning, or the alarming lack of knowledge people here have about their own country. a hot dog wont cure it. my point was not to go after CALEB STURGIS but to bring a point of understanding what this sacred day in american [and world] history is all about! and to make he and others think about how they will address it next year and in the future. americans should start NOW and learn about how and why independence day came about. [wont hurt non american's either. i love world history and have read a LOT about britain's. WINSTON CHURCHILL is one of my hero's who is as important of a statesman as ben franklin or thomas jefferson or ronald reagan was in world history.]

my blood pressure is fine U.K. my country however, thats a different story.

“This is no time for ease and comfort. It is time to dare and endure.”

Winston Churchill

Note to self, all those freedoms DO NOT include traveling abroad on Independence Day...

and it was not intended by myself.

sorry you missed the point.

and here is my issue U.K, it has become all about the hot dog and the beer and the kids fireworks and NO emphasis on what the day and the celebration are for.

Unfortunately, every holiday with a significant meaning has been dumbed down to candy day (Easter) Christmas (presents) and 4th of July...the real reason for Independence day isn't neglected to the point like today's Easter and Christmas holidays, but they have all definitely lost their meaning for the most part. The world has rapidly changed the last 100 years, more so than any other time in mankind's history. For better, or worse...I honestly don't think we will thrive on the path that we are on for long if we keep it up.

I loved all of wakes quotes. this is a man (that if he drank) I would love to sit down and have a beer with. he seems focused and cerebrial. he always says the right things and seems like a def pro at life like he is at football. as far as caleb Sturgis goes. im sure in cancun they might not be shutting down the banks but im sure there will be some celebration going on. and considering its his wedding im sure his wife to be had something to do with them being married in cancun. 99% of men would prob just be happy going to the courthouse to tie the knot. its not like he said he celebrates it every year in cancun. I work night shift 7pm-7am. I had to work the night of july 3rd and 4th, meaning I slept bout all day on the 4th. im grilling out today, the 6th...oh wow im enjoying myself two days afterwards, does that make me a bad American. these guys are football players, not leaders of our nation. if Obama said he wanted to go to Iraq to celebrate the 4th of july, then be critical. our somewhat decent kicker going out of country, big whoop. the main thing I took out of the entire article is how good of a man wake seems to be.

ehh you wont like hearing this NRA but its what happens when time passes (and *some* would suggest its because liberals get their grubby mitts on things) your much further behind the timeline but your on a similar timeline than us.

The UK used to be a patriotic country, now we can't fly our national flag on a government building without someone worrying if it will upset an immigrant. British history has been basically written out of schools, we are taught to be ashamed of what our ancestors did - you know, they did some unpleasant things, but am I ashamed of the biggest empire the world has ever seen? That we founded awesome countries like America, Australia and Canada? Eh no im not - not at all. In school we learn german and US history and how many votes the communist party got in the 1911 german elections. We don't learn anything about our own country. It is considered a bad thing to promote our own culture and "multiculturalism" is forced down our throats at every cost.

And like said above, every holiday like christmas, easter and just about everything has lost all significance beyond a day off work. Look at Ireland - whilst im not of the mindset/political view to celebrate such things, when the Catholics celebrate saint patricks day none of then give a feck about saint patrick, its just an excuse to go out onto the streets get drunk and smash windows.

Your well behind us on this road, but you seem to be very much on the same path. Enjoy it will you can.

And thats probably enough politics for the main forum lol

Just for the record we celebrate independence day on July 4th which is the wrong day. The declaration was written on july 2. According to the congressional records of the time half of the signers of the declaration were not even elected to office until August 9. July 4th marks the day a copy of the declaration (which would be amended and changed numerous times before finally being signed by all delegates and sent to Britian) was read publicly. The founding fathers never gathered in one place to sign this document. They we all wanted criminals in the eyes of the British crown. They did not gather deliberate and write. They got to Philladelphia whenever they could signed of refused to sign then dodged British soliders to go home. Basically independence day should fall more along the lines of August 9 and not JUly 4th.

Eh i think a slight over reaction... the guy's getting married and going to cancun to do so. I doubt he planned his wedding around the 4th of july intentionally if it was in Cancun. Ya it was dumb to say 'whatever they do down there' but some reporter probably put him on the spot and he didn't know what else to say. Not that I condone lack of respect for Independence Day... just a little out of context is all i think.

Hate to tell you Cinco Di Mayo is not Mexican independence day. Its a commemoration of the "Battle of Puebla" A victory over the French. It was actually a fairly important possible battle for the United States since it was quite likely that the French would have aided the confederacy. With the amount of Mexican Americans in this country I'm not sure why people have an issue with our children learning a broader spectrum of world culture especially since this battle could have changed the shape of our nation forever. Its amazing how many people in America think that Cinco Di Mayo is Mexican Indepence DAy which is actually Sept 16 and I know of no schools that have went out of their way to celebrate or recognize that date.

Cinco de Mayo is a big deal in Puebla , where the famous battle took place but it really isn't as important as most people think. September 16, Independence Day, is a much more important holiday in Mexico. For some reason, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States of America, by Mexicans and Americans alike, than it is in Mexico. One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time, it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican territories such as Texas and California. It was ignored in Mexico after a while but still celebrated north of the border, which never got out of the habit of remembering the famous battle.

So . . .

Actually, stripping all the jingoistic rhetoric out of this, no matter what day you choose to commemorate this "Independence," the only bearing it has on the "real Americans" is that for a protracted period of time before and afterwards, they were slaughtered, corrupted, exploited, had their centuries-old land stolen (by decree of governments they did not elect and/or by violence), and generally ****ed over. We can see the disgraceful residual effects on this tradition-rich, long-ensconced culture today on reservations where many of them are destined for lives of hopeless alcoholism and illiteracy, condemned to live in squalor and abject poverty.

Not to mention that for many Americans July 4th means little since many of their ancestors and living relatives haven't exactly been a part of of being independent of anything. Namely the native americans as you mentioned and African Americans as well as many others over the years
