7/31 - camp tweets

this is what I take from today's reports:

1. Not many mistakes other than snaps for O. Seems offense is getting the down the jist of this offense. RT running ball instead of looking for throw. Is that coaches telling him to run and use his skills? Im all for it until it gets out of hand missing WR's.

2. Defense hitting hard. Loving the depth on DL and DB's and if Mccain ends up being the steal of the undrafted's, then we have something here. The kid has hit WR's over the middle, tipped pass, and just overall made plays moving himself into the limelight of camp a bit. Wonder if his arm length is good to match his height. Thinking of some 6'5" pass rusher who made probowl for Buffalo years ago. #95.

3. OL is seemingly finding its top 5 with Smith moving to RG minus Pouncey. I loved the one pic last night of James on Wake. He looks the part even though in shorts. I think James is going to be solid through the season with some jumpstarts/holding calls on him from time to time. refs like to pick on rookies.

Nope. I can remember posts of people saying that Pouncey was tipping plays off because certain things did not happen in the two games he missed. Silly talk, but it was there.

North is right. It was Jerry who would always look back to the QB for some reason.

From a Draft analysis... Rivals.com
On the Hoof: One of the more unique prospects physically in the country, McCain is an extremely long, gangly outside linebacker. He has long, skinny arms and legs, is wiry strong and looks much more like a basketball player than a football player out of pads.

Interesting prospect. Not many 6'5" Linebackers can run a 4.67 40. He has ability but he got kicked off the Cal team for a certain transgression that was described as "conduct detrimental to the team" but was not explained to the media. Speculation on the Cal website that he wanted to fight one of his coaches. Just speculation, but maybe he has learned from his transgression.

Pretty sure he's talking about the pouncey haters, who said you can put anyone at center and be good enough. Because center is such an easy position to fill.

Pouncey wasn't exactly fluid or competent his Sr season @ UF or the 1st part of his (hopefully brief) tenure as a Dolphin.

i think if mccain makes it another position loses a slot...i would think trusnick still makes it...freeny is the one i think may be out...mccains definitely showing well in pads it seems...

if mccain makes it that could mean no 6th wr or no 4th rb or no 4th te etc...definitely that kid will be one to watch come preseason...same for a possible 5th dt...

Here is how I am guessing the positional numbers will break down for the 53:

QB - 3
RB - 4
TE/H-Back/FB - 4
WR - 5
OL - 9
Offense: 25

DL - 9 or 8
LB - 7
DB - 9 or 10
Defense: 25

Specialists: 3

Total: 53

Possibly, 6 WRs with 26 total offensive players, if the 6th guy is a RS or someone they want to protect from being poached. Then 24 of defense with the breakdown being 8 DL, 7 LB, 9 RB.
7 seems likely to be the number of LBs. 5 are likely to be locks. Misi, Wheeler, Ellerbe, Jenkins, Tripp. That leaves 2 slots being competed for by Trusnik, Freeny, McCain, et al.

I will keep railing about this…with the obvious need at C, why not sign a vet and allow him to roll with Colledge and maybe Smith at RG and find some chemistry? Reckless plan.

This is the same staff that started Samuda all summer and cut him at the end of the summer. SMH.

Not the same staff. New OC, new OL coach, and new Asst OL coach.

Since Wheeler and Ellerbe are guaranteed their full salaries this season, it makes no sense to cut either one, even if they do not start.

You know I hear this logic often and it makes since. However, if I am a coach and I want the best players on my roster and not just those with the highest guaranteed money, then I keep a LB that is better than Wheeler. Wheeler gets paid no matter what. I might as well replace him with a better player after all winning keeps my job not having high salaried players on my roster. Just my opinion.

I am consistently amused by the fact that Cameron Wake simply refuses to wear a shirt that fits.

I could care less about salaries. If they aren't the "Best 53", then cut them...or trade them for whatever scraps you can get. The logic of keeping crap players because of economics is part of what has kept this team at the bottom for so long...
