A Bit More on Crossman

He always has owned it.
I Guess that was beyond your "insight" to the team.

Too many posters here look for scape goats as opposed to in-depth repair answers.
Those guys are the ones who would use clay to patch a hole in a tire. - LOL
Makes you almost miss Jakeem Grant. Almost. Ty Hill returned kicks for the Chiefs in 2018. Why cannot Waddle in 2024? Because he’s fragile. He was terrific at it in college.

Heard the Tom Brady podcast the other day in which he explains that changes in the rules driven by player safety concerns have made Special Teams progressively less and less significant. Bear in mind that in New England, Belichick had a super strong emphasis on ST and that was the environment where Brady evolved. It was interesting to hear him basically say that ST are now a relative non-issue. Yes, sometimes big plays occur (like the long TD Buffalo killed us in Miami), but they are the exception, not the norm.
I get the impression that McDaniel would concur with TB12. He'd like a more from Special Teams. Jason Sanders had a good season as a reliable kicker and he seems to like Crossman on his coaching staff. However, another poor season will probably see Crossman fired.

Not a fan of Crossman at all.. our special teams is horrible
Me neither. So he said a lot without saying anything at all really. He kept this effing guys because "the players respond to him"???? That's ridiculous. Effing stupid. This is a results oriented business and they ain't producing results but it's ok because the "players respond to him"... thats code for he's to effing nice and doesn't wanna hurt anyone's feelings. Unreal

McDaniel has owned his coaching hires ever since he was hired. He has no problem getting rid of coaches if he feels they are a fit for his coaching staff.

He obviously has a lot more confidence in Crossman than a lot of fans do.

Thing is, I doubt some of the actual special team players on the field will get anywhere the same level of patience or benefit of the doubt — even if they are good players/people with a great attitude.

I often wish these HC’s were as heavy-handed and intolerant of mistakes towards their assistant coaches as they are the players.

To some degree Coach McD has been, but for some reason not with this dude. Perhaps Crossman has some dirt on the HC? Lmao.

It's not the kicking or return game that's the concern with Crossman. It's his coverage units, and blocking for kicks.

Those units have been bottom 5 in the league for several years. Many bring up thi kicking and returns when speaking of Crossman, but, again it's not the returns or the kicks lol, it's the defense and blocking that's absolutely atrocious on our special teams.

Everyone does these a bit different, but our rankings seem to be...

2023 - 31st
2022 - 27th
2021 - 22nd
2020 - 7th
2019 - 24th

This is with the Fins. Interesting, in 2021 he was also the Assistant Head Coach, but that ended when McD came in for 2022.

I get that but the guy hasn’t delivered results. The 96 yard punt return TD cost us the no 2 seed. An isolated incident, ok. But it wasn’t. He should have been replaced IMO.

Horrible and trending the wrong way. The guy blows chunks.

This may have been said, but the league is talking about a trial of the UFL kickoff return rules

It’s definitely not as much of a factor as it used to be if for no other reason than almost every kickoff is a touchback. Put it’s still important in deciding games. In fact, KC’s ST was the real reason they won the SB. Think about it - 57 yard FG, punt that hit the blocker and recovered by KC was a game changer. And the biggest reason - the blocked PAT kept it a 3 point game the entire 4th quarter. 3 HUGE ST plays and if they don’t get those they don’t win. Just because something isn’t as important in general, doesn’t mean you still don’t try to better than ranked 31st at it IMO.

We had Mostert doing it...

But yes, because he is fragile.

Could be wrong but I remember discussions around the 2021 and 2022 rosters about the number of ST specialists we were carrying.

Guys like:
- Fejedelem
- Crossen
- Sherfield
- Carter

It doesn’t seem like we were a lot better in those years … but does seem like we had fewer ST specialists last year
