Diehard Phinatic!
Last season taught us a head coach is only as good as the staff he assembles.
Tony Sparano’s Miami Dolphins struggled early, losing the season’s first seven games, and lackluster coaching shoulders most of the blame for the team’s poor start.
Coincidentally, Joe Philbin’s staff features eight holdovers from Sparano’s 2011 staff of assistants. But most of what remains are keepers.
The Dolphins new coaching staff also features plenty of former college assistants, which will be good IF the Dolphins plan to field a young team.
Mike Sherman is Joe Philbin's top hire on his coaching staff.
However, the Dolphins’ new staff appears solid.
Philbin has surrounded himself with friends and mentors, which creates good harmony and a solid counsel of advisers.
Key members of both the offensive and defensive staff have a history of working together. And there are three assistants – Mike Sherman, Ken O’Keefe and Darren Rizzi – who have head coaching experience.
Coordinators
Mike Sherman – Offensive Coordinator/ Quarterbacks coach
Kevin Coyle – Defensive Coordinator
You’ll struggle to find someone who won’t say Sherman’s a good coach, especially when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. I’ve fallen in love with Sherman’s passing game watching cut ups of Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill. It’s multiple, quick striking, and effective with the right quarterback (needs accuracy and the ability to make quick decisions) behind the trigger. Coyle comes from one of my favorite NFL defenses. Why do I like the Bengals so much? Because Marvin Lewis is a genius. His staff’s make the most out of what they have, and Cincinnati is usually aggressive, and produces turnovers. Coyle doesn’t have experience as a coordinator in the NFL, but he does have 15 years of coordinator experience on the college level.
