Last season taught us a head coach is only as good as the staff he assembles.
Tony Sparano’s Miami Dolphins struggled early, losing the season’s first seven games, and lackluster coaching shoulders most of the blame for the team’s poor start.
Coincidentally, Joe Philbin’s staff features eight holdovers from Sparano’s 2011 staff of assistants. But most of what remains are keepers.
The Dolphins new coaching staff also features plenty of former college assistants, which will be good IF the Dolphins plan to field a young team.

Mike Sherman is Joe Philbin's top hire on his coaching staff.

However, the Dolphins’ new staff appears solid.
Philbin has surrounded himself with friends and mentors, which creates good harmony and a solid counsel of advisers.
Key members of both the offensive and defensive staff have a history of working together. And there are three assistants – Mike Sherman, Ken O’Keefe and Darren Rizzi – who have head coaching experience.
Coordinators
Mike Sherman – Offensive Coordinator/ Quarterbacks coach
Kevin Coyle – Defensive Coordinator
You’ll struggle to find someone who won’t say Sherman’s a good coach, especially when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. I’ve fallen in love with Sherman’s passing game watching cut ups of Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill. It’s multiple, quick striking, and effective with the right quarterback (needs accuracy and the ability to make quick decisions) behind the trigger. Coyle comes from one of my favorite NFL defenses. Why do I like the Bengals so much? Because Marvin Lewis is a genius. His staff’s make the most out of what they have, and Cincinnati is usually aggressive, and produces turnovers. Coyle doesn’t have experience as a coordinator in the NFL, but he does have 15 years of coordinator experience on the college level.

I hope that we finally have a staff that will make adjustments during the games and not celebrate field goals.

"Special Teams
Darren Rizzi - Special Teams Coordinator
Dave Fipp – Assistant Special Teams coach
Special teams was the best coached unit last season. Fipp got the most out of Brandon Fields, who produced a career year, and Dan Carpenter also had a solid season. The coverage units were strong all season, and Davone Bess was one of the NFL’s top punt returners. I’m excited to see what Rizzi and Fipp will do together in year two of their partnership."

Wait... WHAT!?!

He'll never break one for a TD, but during the 2nd half of the year, he consistently had good returns. He was like top 5 or 6 in terms of average. Would rather have a home run hitter though...

Bess doesn't make mistakes like some returners (Kyle Williams)....although Bess may not have breakaway speed, he makes up for it with his good decisions and consistency. But I would not be opposed to an upgrade at PR.

The only spot where I am antsy is Coyle at defensive coordinator. He did work with Mike Zimmer and Marvin Lewis, two excellent defensive minds, so hopefully Coyle is up to the task.

I think its a plus that we got some younger, college coaches. That's a model that can work well.

Overall, its a pretty hungry staff, so hopefully that bodes well.

Come to think of it, I can't imagine Coach Joe celebrating anything all that much !

I don't see him celebrating all that much and I like that. Only time you should be celebrating is in the locker room after the game and you won that game. Hopefully he is like a Bill Belichick when he's on the sidelines. No emotion even after scoring a TD because he knows the game isnt over until it hits 0:00 in the 4th quarter.
