Acquiring Vincent Jackson an Off Season View

In Jeff Ireland's own words, "we are not going to mortgage the franchise for one player."

Translation: "We are closing all possibilities of signing a high-profile free agent and will stick to the draft. Peace out homies."

We've spent the last few years building depth in talent at all positions, and you want to trade away 10-12 players for extra picks? I don't get it.

Not that I disagree with you, but other than along the lines, where is our depth and talent?

Take a look here. It's pretty self explanatory. KC's safeties are either old and injury prone or just plain bad. They need to draft OL on the 1st day. Everybody knows that.

As far as Soliai goes, what do you think his trade value is?
You do realize a 3rd is a rather high pick right? Nobody is going to give a 5th for Wilson, and you're talking about a 3rd?

As for Kindle, putting him at ILB is a rather dumb idea.

Try thinking of it this way, as far as the 1st and 3rd thing goes.

Would you rather have Teddy Ginn and Patrick Turner or, Vincent Jackson.

Or how about this one....

Would you rather have Jason Allen and Derek Hagen or, Vincent Jackson.

I think it is said something like....a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush.

The Dolphins could know what they are getting for their 1st and 3rd or they could just go gambling again, and they really aren't that good at it.
Really aren't that good at it  Have you seen our drafts since Parcells took over? I'd say he's doing a pretty good job at it... Nobody is giving up two high draft picks for Jackson, get over it.

Or would you want Rolando McClain and ________

Are you sure he will actually be there? Or are you advocating trading up?

Because that would be multiple picks for one guy, and some people think thats mortgaging the franchise.

It's nice to have the first pick in the draft. It kinda helps a little.

Pleanty of teams have still screwed it up....folks who can evaluate and put a worth on talent helps a little too....

Stephen Ross and friends, get your checkbooks out.

Can it really be done?? I think so. A huge front loaded contract offer may keep the Chargers from matching, but the amounts would have to resemble a Pete Carroll like deal.

Is he worth it? I think so. Guys this big, strong and fast are almost nonexistent; and he is brilliant as well. He scored something in the 30's on his wonderlic, which for a center is pedestrian but for a WR it's very high.

Going this way will cost a lot more than just his deal. It means signing an extra
high priced FA. It means bringing back veterans Taylor,Ferguson and Pennington.
Draft picks are much cheaper. So this is the look I came up with.

Acquire FA's Vincent Jackson,NT Ryan Pickett,Ben Watson and S John Wendling.Wendling was just cut by Buffalo. Wendling is a special teams ace who wasn't given a chance to start or play much at all because of their great depth at the position.Pickett will have to be overpaid, I don't see much choice.
Re-sign: Jason Taylor,Jason Ferguson, and Chad Pennington

Trade Tyler Thigpen,Phillip Merling, and a 6th to the Rams for their 2nd.Looks like Leonard Little is gone for sure now that the tampering is being done successfully. Bulger's locker is empty and Boller isn't being asked back. Rams probably still draft a youngster and still pursue Vick, but Thigpen could be a great choice for a #2.
I know opinions on these guys vary widely. Some want Thigpen to have a legit shot at beating out Henne and others see Thiggy as another AJ Feely,a wasted draft pick. I flat don't know but with keeping Pennington he becomes expendable. Merling is good, but there just isn't room on the roster for all our up and comers at the DE position. We can't get anything for McDaniel or Baker or Illama-Francis or Dotson, so I say, get what we can for Merling and give Baker and Illama-Francis a shot. I think, given a year or two Illama-Francis may surprise. He was a 2nd round pick.

Trade Gibril Wilson and Paul Soliai to KC for their 3rd. Mike Brown is 33 and an extreme injury risk, and the Chiefs played a 3-4 last year without a traditional NT. Soliai is an amazing athlete but I just think the Dolphins need to get a little smarter as a team. Soliai ran 5.10 forty at 350 lbs but he also got a 9 on his wonderlic. Gibril just really let us down at crucial moments last year, but he actually graded out very high. He will return to SS and quite probably earn his money in KC, but he is anethema in Miami.

Trade Channing Crowder and Patrick Turner for a 2011 pick. I don't think Crowder would be happy and productive if moved and or demoted so, ya know, movin on. Turner becomes obsolete with the acquisition of the star.

Dolphins trade down in the 2nd and acquire a 4th.
Dolphins trade their two 6ths and a 7th to move up into the 5th and get Moats.

Draft:
2nd...........Sergio Kindle...............ILB...*IQ* *HC*
2nd...........Jon Asamoah...............OG..4yr starter at RG *IQ* *HC*
3rd............Akwasi Owusu-Ansah...FS/CB/PR/KR Probably the #2FS,dime,PR
4th............Joe Pawelek............ILB...Genius,too small, too slow,so was Zach
4th............Blair White..............WR..Genius,an absolute steal here.
5th............Arthur Moats...........OLB...Nolan's new Dumervil
7th............Abe Koroma.............NT..Character issues but a nice P.S. guy.

Roster:
QB...........................Henne,Penny,White
RB...........................Ronnie,Ricky,Cobbs,Sheets
FB...........................Polite,Hilliard
WR..........................Jackson,Hartline,White,Bess,Ginn
TE...........................Fasano,Watson,Haynos
OT..........................Long,Carey,Garner,Gardner
C/OG.......................Grove,Smiley,Asamoah,Berger,Thomas

DT..........................Pickett,Ferguson
DE..........................Starks,Langford,McDaniel,Baker,Illama-Francis
ILB.........................Pawelek,Kindle,Torbor,Anderson
OLB........................Taylor,Wake,Moses,Moats,Johnston(LS)
S...........................Bell,Clemons,Owusu-Ansah,Culver,Wendling
CB.........................W.Allen,Davis,Smith,J.Allen[With W.Allen the nickel in the rotation.]
K..........................Carpenter
P..........................Fields

you would have better luck with this trade if you were to draft cj spiller #12 and trade him to the chargers for v jackson.

Ya, the 1st and 3rd thing is a little deceptive in the way it presents itself.

For example, there is a great cry for a big time #1 WR in Miami, and some are saying they should draft Dez Bryant. But, he may very well not be available.
But say he is and the Dolphins spend their 1st on Bryant.

OK, you spent a draft pick and you got the player you wanted.

How in the world is giving up an extra 3rd round pick for a truly great player who has proved himself, "mortgaging the franchise"?

The contract can be front loaded to avoid cap hell in the future; if there is one in 2011, it's not for sure.

Don't be deceived by the FO line. For a lot of different reasons, those guys misrepresent the truth at least half the time.

I would without any hesitation give up a third for an established all-pro WR who is still young and has everything you look for, instead of saving the third and depending on an unproven rookie. And we know rookie WR's rarely have an impact there 1st year.

I seriously doubt the draft picks are even the issue when the FO is making there considerations. It's the money. Huiezenga would have paid in an uncapped year. I don't know about Ross.

If they truly love the player, like they say they do, then put up the money and make San Diego make a decision.

Because this team isn't one WR away from contending. And yes, the draft picks are the issue. You don't trade a 1st and a 3rd for a WR when you have several holes to fill, and some of them are even higher priority than WR...

That's the point of the thread. To show that holes could still be filled. Improvements can still be made.

It isn't like we are giving up 2 draft picks. We are getting our player. Yes,
the 3rd round pick is the pick in question.

Any team would give a 1st round pick for Vincent Jackson. The pick in question, is the 3rd round pick.

There are a ton of rookie prospects that the Dolphins can get for 1 draft pick.

None of them, even resemble Vincent Jackson. Jackson is far bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter than any of them.

Jackson was the best WR in the NFL last year if you go by PFF.

The real question isn't, would you give a 1st and a 3rd for Vincent Jackson?
because if you draft a guy, you are still giving up a pick. The real question is'
would you give up the extra 3rd for the best WR in the NFL who is still young and would produce at a high level for at least the duration of a 5 year contract.

This is the question. The rest of the thread is just a hodge podge of different stuff to show that the holes can still be filled.

I don't want to overpay Ryan Pickett to play NT for the Dolphins, but haven't you guys had it with Soliai?
I know it's hard to let go, he has Shaun Rogers athleticism, but he doesn't know how to use it. It just doesn't appear he is going to get it. But he isn't worthless. How many 350 lbls. guys can run a 5.1 forty.

The opportunity to improve this team dramatically is there. But it will cost a fortune this 1 year. The question really is....Are they willing to spend an extra
20 million dollars or whatever on FA's.

It's time to go back to madden....just make sure you keep the salary cap turned off.
