Ailing knee sacks Robertson; surgery not likely

Defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, one of the Jets' defensive anchors, visited renowned orthopedist James Andrews yesterday in Birmingham, Ala., to get a second opinion on a problematic knee, the Daily News has learned.
Robertson, the fourth pick in the 2003 draft, has missed several practices in training camp due to discomfort. Until yesterday, the club hadn't acknowledged any sort of knee problem.

Surgery isn't an option, according to Herm Edwards and Robertson's agent.

"It's just something he'll have to deal with his whole career," Edwards said.

Neither Edwards nor the agent, Hadley Engelhard, felt comfortable discussing the club's diagnosis, although Engelhard claimed there is "no structural damage."

It's believed that Robertson, 23, who hasn't missed a game in two seasons, has little or no cartilage in his knee, presumably the result of a previous operation. It is causing a "bone on bone" effect in the joint, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Players have been known to play many years with that type of condition; it often becomes a pain-tolerance issue.

In Robertson's case, it has to be a concern because he is such a valuable player. The Jets traded two first-round picks and gave him $13million in bonuses, expecting him to become a dominant player.

"He worked really hard in the offseason, and he got frustrated because it was bothering him, so I set up an appointment to get a second opinion," Engelhard said. "That's all there is to it."

The Jets' medical staff prescribed rest, Engelhard said.

Robertson came to camp in the best shape of his career, reporting at his required weight of 315 pounds. A year ago, he was fined by the team for being 325, he revealed last week.

"When you're overweight, you can be quick, but you can't be quick all the time," said Robertson, who hopes to be in the 305 to 310 range by opening day. "The weight catches up with you and you start to wear down. I want to be quick every snap, not even think about getting tired."

After a disappointing rookie year, Robertson made significant strides last season, finishing with 60 tackles and 3-1/2 sacks. His development was one of the keys to the overall improvement of the defense.

Robertson, who predicted before last season that he was "ready to go out and dominate," expects more big things.

"I believe last year I did my thing and had a big year," he said. "There's always room for improvement. It's going to be even better."

IMHO this is pretty serious to be an issue at such an early part of his career. This can only get worse with full contact football. I have no idea how it will play out, but it's a shame to see on such a promising guy.

while he was considered by a lot to be a bust in his draft class w/ a few boos from jet's fans when he was drafted,I thought he did very well last year.

He did well, but he has not yet proven to be worth 2 1st round picks. Not even close.

he wasn't good last year he was GREAT. He got no respect b/c of his struggles as a rookie which everyone holds over him for some reason but he was the key to our D and he made jason Ferguson alot of money as a FA. He is a big time DT who is getting better, the headline is very misleading. It's normal stuff what he is going through and he'll be fine. He should get the pro bowl spot this year that he deserved a year ago.

Normal?! Hardly. I am not saying he is done, but that is far from normal. Bone on bone on a man that size playing contact football is not the norm. This is serious no matter how you want to spin it.

Could be serious down the road but he'll be ok for now. He dealt w/ it last year too and was huge for us.

Good. Great. Whatever.

Not worth 2 1st round picks.

Was Ricky worth the 2 1st rd picks? Robertson was worth it, we took the extra pick we got from the Coles RFA signing and used it to move up. Had we not Belichick and NE would have and he'd be killing us now instead of helping us. He was the key to our defensive turnaround last year and he is on the verge of stardom.

No. Not at all. Terrible trade.

What does that have to do with Robertson?

How does that help your argument in the slightest?

This guy ranks the top 10 DT's. Robertson is not one of them:

Here is another ranking. Again, no Robertson

Here is another one. He is finally mentioned at about 15th

I don't care what the rankings tell me, I know what I saw. These are the same guys that never talked about jason ferguson & Kareem McKenzie but now that they are ex-Jets they are "huge" losses and great players. The man was the key to our turnaround and blew up opposing offenses.

You gave up 2 1st rounders for Ricky, missed the playofffs 2 years w/ him and he quit on you in yr 3. We gave up 2 1st rounders(1 really, we just moved up) and got a guy that is a big time DT and was great for us in year 2 helping our D become top 5 and helping our team make the div rd of the playoffs.

Man, they have three integral cogs who are missing significant time and one or two may miss the season opener.

Pennington
Law
Robertson

Ricky was a bad trade for 2 #1's
Dewayne is a bad trade for 2 #1's

Dewayne hasn't missed any time, where do you get he may miss the opener? and where have you read that Chad will msis the opener?

Dewayne is a bad trade for 2 #1's

Dewayne was not a bad trade, you guys gave up 2 1st rounders, we actually gave up1 b/c we just moved up. Dewayne is a big time DT on one of the best D's in the NFL, Ricky had 1 great season and 1 mediocre season then quit on you. Dewayne is young and getting better, Ricky is finished.
