Ajayi has been traded to Eagles for a 4th round pick

There could be more to it than that. Teams could've known Ajayi was leaving regardless so they didn't have to 'pry' them off our hands. Sorta like how everyone and their mom knew the Eagles were fire saling Chip Kelly players so they could be had for bargain bin prices. The Titans got that memo. The Dolphins did not. Pepperidge Farm Roseman remembered and took ole Tbum for a ride again.

Ajayi could very well be Channing Crowder with the knees eventually just giving up. And it could be soon. But we haven't seen it yet ... so I think we could've waited closer to playoff time when teams are in the hunt and - in their minds - a RB away from a ring. But Gase is impatient (borderline impulsive) and couldn't wait because he wanted to send a message. Worked the last time ... but those players were terrible. This was a cheap good one who needs to be replaced. Odds aren't exactly stacked in our favor here.

I think the fact that we were so desperate to unload him told other teams everything they needed to know about his value.

Another winning streak is not gonna happen. This team is gonna quit on Gase. They already had a lot of players not caring for him after he destroyed the offense by basing it on a QB he brought out of retirement who had to retire because he sucked.

This is a different situation, this is a different team with Gase.

In Dolphins coaching staffs past, Miami did not come out at halftime and win the games because the players almost seemed to look like a different team...more focused, playing harder, better plan (actual adjustments).

On this team, the threat of, play my way or the highway, is far more then just a threat, and seems to be a nobody is exempt type of threat.

On this team, injuries are no excuse to lose or look bad, you either do your job next to the next man standing or as the next man standing, or Bye bye.

On other teams, you became a distraction, felt nothing/felt good after a loss, did not follow the plan, not much would happen, on this team you better get your butt in gear and start caring, listening or stop being a distraction, or you may not last another week.

Finally and most important, you learn to play as a team, and never ever quit, no matter what is happening, or again...Bye bye.

All I'm saying is that this does not seem to be the same old Dolphins. Is it because of Gase? I don't know for sure, but they are winning even with injuries that used to guarantee we would lose. Yes, when we win, we win ugly, but the key here is we Win, and until Gase proves to me he is more of hindrance then a plus to the growth of the team, I will trust him.

I also liked Ajayi, and was hoping for a power running back instead of speed back, but if with this message the team all of a sudden starts playing sharp football (Win or lose), I will not care...this at the end of the day is about a team, not a player.

Don't care. The bottom line is you don't give away your pro bowl rb in his prime for 4th rounder.

If he was that good, then why no more action on him? This is not like the off season where he has more/most/all(?) the leverage as he goes into contract talks, the FO held all the cards -- and the best offer we got was a low 4th. That suggests that there is more going on than we on the outside could see (e.g., problems in the locker room, problems with his coaches, knees, etc.). To put it another way, the market spoke on his value, and it sucked.

All the great coaches seem to play by the same rule for getting and keeping the players doing things the way they want things: "My way or the highway, and nothing is too small an infraction to send you packing (unless your name is Marino or Brady)". And Ajayi wasn't anywhere near Marino or Brady in value to this team and so away he goes. Coaches have to know who to spend their very limited time and resources on, and despite digging our arse out the fire in a couple of games, he just wasn't worth it. He's not a transcendent player, plays a position that's easy'ish to replace and typically doesn't have a long shelf life regardless, and has known health issues (see above about trade value) with a contract year around the corner.

I'm not really shocked by this. Reading between the lines of an emotional whiny young coach you could sense the possibility. That's why I mentioned Ajayi as our best player a couple of nights ago and how he would fare elsewhere if we traded him.

The behind the scenes whispers don't interest me. Nor the knee stuff. Lamar Miller had the shoulders that were going to dramatically shorten his career. Gase and this organization get stuck in short term. I don't care about short term. You are supposed to wade through natural Crowd lulls and emerge with your highest denomination chips intact.

This move is like a gambler who goes on tilt and instead of knowing to calm down and go back to his room for a day or two, he continues to play while on tilt, not fully valuing those remaining chips or understanding how much prettier they will look in the morning.

Our offense is going to improve beginning Sunday night. That's not much of a risk. It's no different than when I posted after the Titans game that the defense was markedly overrated. Logic aims Crowd toward the middle, not the edges. The offense was going to improve with or without Jay Ajayi. No offense gets stalled where we've been. Not for long.

Mercury Morris was a problem in the early '70s. That's one reason I'm not impressed with behind the scenes gunk. Morris was and is emotional. Decades later he fretted the Patriots at 19-0 so you can imagine what he was like as a young talented running back who was not starting or receiving enough carries. I had two neighborhood friends who were sons of Dolphin assistant coaches so I heard stuff that was never making it into the papers about Mercury and his complaints. But it wasn't a big deal because all of us knew Don Shula was in the midst of acquiring talent, not jettisoning it.

Shula would make the necessary changes in the backfield rotation for 1972. He did. Kiick was briefly hurt.

Gase doesn't know how to use a feature running back. It's been awkward to watch. So often I've been expecting first down play action followed by an aggressive dart over the middle. Instead it's a lethargic running play, called and blocked without commitment. I suspect Gase is more like a Philbin type who really wants to throw the ball 40 times per game, even if he's been giving lip service the other way. This move probably frees up Gase to be more true to himself.

So we draft a guy in the 5th. Develop him into one of the best running back in the NFL. Then trade him for a 4th in his prime.

Typical Dolphins.

I am curious as to why Landry was removed from the trading block. I wonder if he and Gase worked out their differences today. I understand the logic of letting him go this off-season and gaining a decent comp pick. Thinking about it and seeing what Tannenbaum is capable of or not, that probably would be higher than what we would get in a trade, LOL. It will be interesting to see Landry's attitude going forward.

Oops. I probably should have put this in the Landry thread. Sorry about that.
Good question.....maybe the Dolphins didn't receive an offer they liked. On a side note, Landry didn't seem very upset when he heard the news about possibility being traded.

If gase is the long term answer to this team than he has to make long term decisions and with his knees jay isn’t a long term part of this team.

If he was a problem off the field and at odds with the coach than I’m ok with the move. This season was over as soon as tannehill went down, so what does jay give us after this year? Maybe another year or two if that.

The team has over achieved this year so far as it did last year. Not sure how anyone can be disappointed with us having the 3rd best record in the nfl the past 16 games before the Balt game unless you have an agenda.

If gase is the answer the next 15 years than I’m ok with him removing problems with a very limited shelf life

I wouldn't buy too much into a PR leak that likely came from the team.

What PR leak? Did you not see Gase's Friday PC? He ripped Ajayi a new one.

He gets "punished" by being sent from a losing team to a super bowl contender...:biggrin

This isn't about punishing Jay Ajayi. This is about removing him from the football team. Do you think Gase traded away a player that he thought was great and would be a net positive toward winning because he wanted to punish him?

Really?...Come on guys...how many years are left on Jay's knee? Two at the most....we knew this when we drafted him.
That's why he was a fifth rounder.....This isn't Ricky Williams or even a Lamar Miller that we are losing.

Since I am from Pennsylvania originally, I have always followed the Eagles as my favorite NFC team...this will be interesting.
