Has really turned it around as opposed to the first couple...

In the last 3 years combined:

49 touchdowns , 27 interceptions

Over 60.5% completion percentage

7,864 yards

The yardage is a bit low, but the touchdown numbers and completion percentage really jumped out at me... I didn't know he had improved that much

In my opinion this kid is getting better every year, the numbers back it up, and it might be a great signing depending on how much $$$ he wants

the more and more i think about it i think he is more of an impact player than what he is getting credit for. A major diffrence will be Sf has a top 5 TE - DAvis and a top 10 Rb in Gore. also that SF D was pretty stout! top 5 D --

W/E it doesnt matter who we get , what this shows is that we have no conviction of who our guy is so be prepared for not a franchise player but another caretaker. I dont think that Smith,Moore,Gerrard are WCO accurate guys Flynn might be but if we arent giving him what he wants then that shows that Philbin isnt pushing hard enough for him. Maybe this is a smokescreen for us to draft 1 but I dont know , These front office guys know how rabid we are for something to squeak out as far as info is concerned and all this does is get everyone riled up.

3 or 4 years into his career, the light comes on.

His team may be ready to pull the plug though and get another QB.

He is not happy and wants out. The Dolphins are high on his list.

>>>>>insert break here<<<<<<

Miami lowballs him, he goes to new team (not Dolphins) and reaches superstardom.

Seen this before?

At the break, rewrite history this time and make Smith OURS like we failed to do with Drew Brees.

Alex Smith is the definition of a "journeyman". A cursory glance at his stats will tell you what you need to know - he is average. Yes he has improved, no he will not lose you the game, but neither will he win you a game. What he was asked to do by Jim Harbaugh was to manage the game and not turn the ball over and Smith proved to by quite adept at that. Now, it is very easy to look at the 49ers success and credit Smith with "getting the team to the playoffs", as the sports media like to give credit and blame soley to the QB. However, the reality is that Smith was never asked to put the team on his back at all last season and he simply rode Gore and the defence to 13 wins. A simple comparison of Moore's stats with Smith's will lead you to the conclusion that they are in a similar league and personally I see no point in swapping one journeyman for another...again.

We have seen Smith's ceiling and you can touch it without having to stand on your tippy-toes.

IT's fair to assume that if Ireland and the F/O want to sign Smith, it is the wrong decision. If they let Smith walk, that is the wrong decision as well. Whatever Ireland does, I will assume it is incorrect.

the tape disproves your theory....with smith you see great athleticism, mobility, and a big arm...

with moore/flynn you see a weak arm, 0 mobility, 0 athleticism....maybe half the velocity........ how can you say their potential is the same?

Alex Smith is a pro-typical WCO QB. I can see him challenging Matt Moore. IF we can sign him, he would be a good fit.
The man was a #1 first round pick. This could be a great way to save face for the franchise. It is worth a shot.
By the end of this season, we will know if he is the guy.

I feel relieved that Flynn signed with Seattle. IMHO, we dodged another bullet by low balling him. Philbin obviously saw enough of him in GB, and was not comfortable hitching his saddle to him.

When the smoke clears, hind sight will show that Ireland did the right moves IMHO.

I'm sorry but....

Smith = Sparano, Both Settle for Field Goals....Please no more Field Goal Fistpumps

You are way off about "half the velocity" mate, the whole Matt Flynn having a weak arm thing has been disproven (there is a post here on FH on that very topic) Take last year out of Smith's career and what do you have? - a player that completes less than 60% of his passes, never threw for more than 2,900 yards and is at more or less a 1:1 ratio of TD:INT.

Even though he has the edge on terms of mobility he was still sacked 44 times last year and only rushed for 150 or so yards, so we are not talking about Vick here. If you are happy with another game manager as our QB, that is cool. I personally would like us to stay with Moore (and draft a QB) rather than continuing to take other teams' castoffs in the vain hope that they turn into an elite player after 7 years of mediocrity.

how exactly was the weak arm thing dis-proven in another thread... all you have to do is turn on the tape and you see flynn has a weaker arm than anyone would like

I like Alex Smith in a WCO. Lord knows we won't sign him and take Garrard instead.

There was an actually factual (as opposed to opinion based) breakdown of the velocity that Flynn had on a pass when compared to some other QBs and his arm strength was more than adequate, but I cannot be bothered looking for the post to be honest. Anyway, this is all a moot point now as Flynn has gone elsewhere. Also, for the record I never mentioned anything about Flynn in my OP and in fact I was not overly fond of him either.

Listen, I hope if we get Smith that he turns into an amazing QB and we go all the way to the Superbowl on his back, but even his best year was average in my opinion. We have a difference of opinion regarding Smith and only time will tell how this all pans out, so lets just leave it at that.
