We may be getting older on D, but it's not like everyone is 36.
I don't think we'll find that game-breaking RB in the third round. If that was the case, we might as well just stick with Lamar Gordon.
We need playmakers on offense. Now.
The track record and shelf life of RBs taken in the top 3rd of round 1 has been on average, comparatively poor in the past. There have been so many so called franchise RBs drafted high in the 1st round in the past who have turned out to be anywhere from very ordinary to complete busts for a variety of reasons. That is what concerns me about tying up a big signing bonus and early first round sized contract on a player at this position. IMO, these 3 are no better than guys like Stephen Jackson and Kevin Jones, who went late in the 1st last year. Though I'm sure some others, maybe you, would not agree with that. Just an opinion and we'll have to see how it all plays out over the next few years.
IMO, we could take a guy like Marion Barber or Vernand Morency in the 3rd and he could end up being as good a value for us as one of the so called big 3. Then at the same time, we'd be getting two excellent prospects for the front 7 who could be cornerstones of our defense for the next 8 seasons or so. Though, if we do go offense early in the 1st, I'd rather we went WR before RB.
Merriman can do more than just rush the passer, and true he is a tweener, or we could say versatile. He is type of player who would give us a lot of so called horizontal depth in the front 7, which is what Belichick's defenses are noted for personnel wise.
