The danger in this game was that Buffalo would dominate us physically, abusing our offensive line while playing at a similar level to the first two and a half quarters of their game hosting Kansas City. I posted that early in the week. They weren't quite to that intensity level but it was similar enough. Not many teams in the current NFL are constructed that way but Buffalo is one of them. I suggest we get used to it. Nobody who followed Marrone's career at Syracuse would be surprised. Today's game had many characteristics of last year's Pinstripe Bowl rout of West Virginia, one season after the Mounties put up more than 70 points in the Orange Bowl versus Clemson.
The first half really wasn't terrible, down 10-0 in a Fury of Anti-Revenge (FAR) game. That angle produces extreme home intensity level in football and basketball, beyond any situational scenario that I'm aware of. I discovered it more than 25 years ago. That angle alone caused me to become a first half bettor because it felt like stealing. Revenge is pathetic and basically worthless compared to home anti-revenge. The statistics in that first half are like ones I've had in my favor dozens and dozens of times.
But our second half was pathetic. The FAR frenzy generally wears off late in the first half to midway third quarter. For Buffalo to carry it an entire game was more a reflection of our vulnerability than anything they did. Heck, they tried to wane, by having guys kicked out of the game and the punt return man seemingly playing for the Dolphins.
I don't understand either the highs or lows around here. We are a moderate team with moderate components. As I posted a few days ago, the same crew who overreacted at 3-0 were overreacting again. We lack great players and therefore we lack great stats. High correlation on that one.
One great aspect of not overreacting is the ability to post the same themes as last week or last month or preseason, instead of reaching for the latest extreme terms, in either direction. I still think we'd play a competitive playoff game unless it's at Cincinnati or at Denver. Those games could get away. Dalton today was managing more touchdown passes than Tannehill had yards per attempt or first downs. Kansas City with its negative YPPA Differential apparently thought the playoffs began two weeks early.
Absolutely no excuses for Tannehill next week. That game is the exact opposite of the Bills game. We are in home Fury of Anti-Revenge (FAR) mode, after the lopsided win against the Jets a few weeks ago. Sun Life, as always, partially suffocates that angle but it still applies. The Jets are in a terrible spot as a road team coming off a victory, and with the bags packed. That type of team historically makes a half hearted effort against a division rival and then is content to call it a season.
We will own the early energy next week. It won't resemble today at all. No reason Tannehill doesn't put up 17+ points in the first half and force the overmatched rookie quarterback to throw into coverage throughout the second half.
