Ok, now that I've seen the actual footage, I'll offer my take (whatever that's worth).
The first thing that stood out was the OUSTANDING job the Jets OL did. I mean, what they did in their first preseason game was something we Dolfans haven't seen from our units in the 21st century, with the possible exception of the Thanksgiving Day game at Dallas in 2003. And that's just sad.
Anyway, Fiedler had absoutely zero pressure on him when he dropped back to throw. And that makes a big difference. It allowed Jay to be accurate and make good decisions.
Still, there were moments where Fiedler was just Fiedler.
On the scoring drive, the Jets just picked up chunks of yards at will. Fiedler was doing great. Then Jay decided to go for the jugular, throwing for the endzone to Justin McCariens, who had 1-on-1 downfield. The CB had great coverage. And the ball hit him right in the hands. Should have been an INT in the endzone. But the guy dropped it. If the CB was a Jets WR, Fiedler would have connected on a beautiful over-the-shoulder 26-yard TD pass.
The thing that would have made it Fiedler-esque is that it would have ended a drive that began at the Jets 2 yard line and had lasted 6:26 to that point.
On an earlier play in the drive, Fiedler stood back in that pocket and threw to FB Jerald Sowell in the flats. Sowell put a great stiff-arm on a LB and picked up 11 yards. Good pass, found the open outlet man. But the color commentator pointed out that Fiedler didn't see a wide open Laveraneus Coles streaking down the middle of the field.
That is classic Fiedler.
My final take: Fiedler was Fiedler. He took what was given, made plays and managed the game well. The results were optimal. But it must be noted that he got exceptional play from the Jet OL and the expected support from RBs Curtis Martin and Derrick Blaylock. In that environment, Sage Rosenfels could have easily given you the same (or better) results.
