Because Dolphins gonna Dolphin. I don't even get upset about it anymore. It's comical. Owners change, GMs change, coaches change, players change, same old Dolphins. Brandon Marshall is a beast, but Philbin didn't want him because of his character. Thanks for that you dummy.
Everyone knows how to use Reggie Bush properly except the Dolphins. My 12 year old nephew even asked me once why they keep running Bush up the middle. "He's better when he catches the ball and runs outside." Yes, a 12 year old said that yet in the NFL, an entire staff of Dolphins employees act as if there's wasn't miles of tape on Bush showing what he does best. Everyone knows it and they still used him wrong.
You don't have to preach to me that Jordan is a LB. I've been arguing it for as long as I've been watching him. It's the only area he has any special traits, but some guys are just better than others. Dion Jordan will never, in any system or situation, be on Von Miller's level. Khalil Mack is much better against the run than Jordan, and he's the much better play maker.
I'm not a big PFF guy, but in 2012, Von Miller graded out as the best SLB in the NFL - even if you remove his productivity as a pass rusher. He's a much better athlete than Jordan, and he's exactly 5 billion times the competitor.

Why do I get the strong sense that those that feel he is being miscast are the people who supported this draft pick from the start. I was against this draft pick BEFORE the draft, argued with people in the draft forum about him.
I was against the pick too, but that doesn't mean Miami is making the most out of its bad pick. When we drafted Jordan, I said, "#3 overall for a LB?" As a DE, he just wasn't anything that resembled a 1st RD prospect - imo. His length and ability to move in space did represent 1st RD value (imo). At this point, we may never know how he would have played if used correctly.

All of the guys we're talking about would be great at either DE or OLB in a 3-4 or SOLB in a 4-3. I have no doubts that even Wake would be a superstar in the SOLB position on our team. My problem with this theory: "well, if he sucks at DE them he must be great as a LB, I know he's great somewhere" is it doesn't hold up against the other great players he's being compared to who I'm pretty sure would all look great no matter where they line up to a man.
And what if you're wrong? What if he's destined to be a mediocre DE or SOLB? If that's true where would he be more valuable? I think if everything else is equal a DE will always be more valuable than a SOLB.
Anyway, I think people are overreacting with the bust talk right now, which is a natural reaction with everything considered. Lets wait and revisit this discussion after the season after we see how he performs with the added weight and/or where the coaches plan to play him. I always got the impression that Philbin was purposely being aloof when discussing how we'd use Jordan and his plan was to get him on the field as an OLB more all along. Though its entirely possible he was being aloof because he knew of the impending suspension the whole time too.

I like it. Very practical advice. Sports and life are no different in this area. If you believe in something, go at it like a madman. Against the reality of the situation, make the necessary adjustments. In Jordan's case, they should have seen the writing on the wall. NOT A DE. The best people at anything have the ability to sort out pitfalls in their minds. Lesser people learn through experience. In an even lower tier, you have people that just don't learn.
Seattle and SF are examples of teams operating in that "best people" tier. Harbaugh saw the writing on the wall with Alex Smith, and he saw what he had in Kaepernick. A lot of people questioned the move, and some jokers still question it, but it was the right move. Alex Smith couldn't keep SF close with SEA. Few NFL teams would have given Russell Wilson (3rd RD pick) a chance to win the job over Matt Flynn after paying him the way SEA did. Those are inspired moves. Miami sees that Jordan is garbage at DE, and should have seen that he has talent at LB based on his play at Oregon. With a pressing need a LB, Miami asks Jordan to play much heavier than he has to date and keeps him at DE.
Wake would not be utilized well as a 4-3 or 3-4 SLB. He doesn't move well in space. Wake is very explosive and tightly wound. Jordan is the opposite. Not very explosive, but he's very agile - especially for a guy his size. Watching him play at Oregon, you see right away where he looked best - in space. I'm sorry that Miami thought they were drafting a stud DE with the #3 overall pick, but their misconceptions don't have no bearing on reality.

I don't like that analogy because in those cases the best player won the job, which is exactly what happened here. Vernon won the job over the third overall pick and I'm not so sure Misi wouldn't have won the job over him at OLB too.
I'm pretty sure we didn't draft him all willy-nilly either, I'm sure they discussed it before the draft and came to the consensus the he would be a DE in our system. You can fault them for coming to that conclusion before taking him but after the wheels are set in motion I don't think its fair to fault them for not changing course so early in the process of the changeover. I mean, Jordan didn't have the sack numbers but lets not pretend he was useless out there. He did make some plays.
I fault them for both.

I wasn't trying to say he will be on their level. I don't even classify Von and Mack in the same category as Jordan, because I view them as different players. Jordan can be one of the better coverage linebackers in the league. He's far superior in coverage than Von and Mack. But they are both substantially better setting the edge in the run game and rushing the passer.
