What's beyond amazing to me is that the team (read: Ireland and Philbin) evidently knew about serious mental illness in Martin and still depended on him to start at tackle.
Why, for the life of me, do you bend over and try to coddle a player who is perhaps the worst at his position in the NFL? Martin had to look up to see mediocre, he was that bad.
The ONLY reason is hubris: IRELAND spent a second round pick on him and had to act like it was worth it.
At the very least, Martin should not have been starting, with these issues. He SHOULD have been on inactive or PUP getting help.
Pair a mentally hurt Martin w. passive-aggressive issues (saving voicemails and texts and now feeding them to the media, etc. Classic P-A actions) and a mentally challenged Incognito (sadistic streak, medicating) and you have a recipe for DISASTER.
And IRELAND depended on both to start. That was his idea of talent acquisition.
Here's a clue: IF THE PLAYER ISN'T MENTALLY STRONG, he can't be counted on, period.
The front office is to blame, without question.
