Would just like some incite, can Daunte Culpepper actually come back from this injury? I know Willis McGahee and Carson Palmer both came back from these types of injuries but i just don't see culpepper's knee ever getting back to strength.

I had the same injury as C-Pep it is easily a two year rehab to get back to 100 percent. It is not that the knee is unable to do the same things it is the recovery time it takes the knee to feel better after a game. It takes alot of time for the pain to go away after you push it.

I've had knee surgeries as a result of athletic injury (both kinds - the "open" surgery, and through the scope). My injury was not as serious as Culpepper's, but I may still be able to provide some information.

First, I think everyone needs to understand that there is no such thing as a knee being the same as it was prior to injury/surgery. As soon as you start removing, replacing, transplanting, or otherwise fixing a major, weight-bearing joint, it is never going to be the same as it was before the injury/surgery. That is not to say you can't regain functionality...it's just never going to be the same as it was.

How much function is regained depends on the seriousness of the injury (in the case of Culpepper, it doesn't get much worse), and how successful rehab is (which largely depends on the amount of time, effort, sweat, tears, and pain you are willing to put into recovery).

Rehab itself is a gradual process that requires people who have a great deal of knowledge in athletic injury and surgical recovery.

Obviously I wasn't there and I don't know for a fact...but I've read the stories about Culpepper's first run at rehab and I know what I saw as he was limping around on the sidelines during pre-season, and I will never understand how anyone could have reasonably believed he was ready to play NFL football when he couldn't bear weight evenly on both legs without pain (resulting in the limp). I know at the time Culpepper self-reported that he was about 80%...for his sake as a human being (forget football for a minute), I hope he was being unrealistically optimistic. If what we saw during pre-season truly was an 80% recovery, then I believe he is likely in for a life in which his knee is a source of chronic pain.

Culpepper's injury was much worse than McGahee's and Palmer's. Culpepper tore his ACL, MCL and PCL which usually has a recovery timetable of 18 to 24 months.

Daunte defied the odds by coming back less than one year. Even then he didn't have full strength or full range of motion in his knee and that should have prevented him not playing when he did.

McGahee tore the same ligaments and it took him a year on the sidelines to actually hit the field. So I compare Pep's injury to McGahee's!

The only thing i will say is I had the same exact injury as T.O. when he broke his leg when with the eagles and i came back from it like 2 weeks earlier than him. So if i can come back from the same injury i think Daunte can come back quiker than other ppl

Heres the thing that proves Pep was rushed....Willis had the same injury...i remember reading in the post about him rehabbing by pushing a truck around a parking lot with his family in it and stuff. He is a running back in the NFL. He took the right time off to let things get back together. Pep was rushed and is still dealing with problems. Sure everyone is different. But a running back cuts, jukes, spins, stops, and slants every play. He is back and is top form again. Why isnt culpepper? He is a mobile quaterback, but he isnt taking jarring hits on his knee every play like a running back {Willis} look...McGahee took the right time, and did things right, and now hes playing in the nfl at top speed.....Pep's future, is still in doubt at this point now. He was rushed back wayyyyy to fast, and thats a sad thing to accept, hopefully he will get right where he needs to be to succeed again, if not, its time for our Phins to move on to the next guy, whoever that shall be

Knees are a *******.I tore a chunk out of my cartilage.Man i was limping for 6 months. That was March 06.My knee the last 3 months has become alot better.I can cut, spin, move and my swivle is back.Like my hips and all the muscles are getting loose and streched. My injury was not as bad as CP.
But it was bad and i couldnt even run or anything for a long time. When i started to get more movement back i hit the gym and would swim.I always would ride my bike because i couldnt run.Now it is almost healed and i feel good.If it took me that long and i hit my rehab hard,a injury of Peps magnitude would be much worse.I think that Pep needs his time.If he cant cut it after this then we have to move on.

Knees are a pain. You really dont relize till you are on IR.
You need them knees.

GO DOLPHINS......#!

U are comaring a broken leg to tearing your MCL, PCL and ACL . . . boy the Daunte haters are out there man.

People keep saying CPEP was "rushed back". Who rushed him back? I'll tell ya "who"...Daunte!!!! Let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt; he wanted to play so bad and redeem himself so bad that he ignored his rehab schedule and just practiced as if nothing was wrong. Perhaps he was so frustrated he was in denial and this led to his continuing knee problems. Is it admirable that the guy wanted it so bad he stopped rehabbing? Is it admirable that he got into a shouting match with Saban when Saban finally sat him down because he refused to accept his problems? Saban coddled his high priced vets so I'm not buyin' the "rushed back" theory. Daunte's a pain in the butt. Hopefully he can turn it around and or be more realistic or else he'll be gone!

Here is another good article on McGahee and his recovery process.

I wonder who performed the surgery on Culpepper.
Dr. John Uribe performed McGahee's and I believe he had handled a lot of surgeries for the Dolphins as team physician from 1989 till 2000.

Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala. Some consider him the best in the country.

Andrews is the top jock doc, the reigning medical superstar to the superstars. An autograph dealer could set up a franchise outside his office at the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. Over the past several years his client list has ranged from Troy Aikman to Charles Barkley to Scottie Pippen to Jack Nicklaus. Jane Fonda was known to drop by to have a knee looked at. Last year, the wrestlers Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan and Sting left autographed photos for his office wall.

Saban and his Fricken Medical staff are more to blame then cpep...They are the 1's who officially clear him to play then its up to Cpep.

I blame 1st the Medical staff then Saban then Cpep.

Thats why the Bills took Mcgahee and didnt play him for another full season...This injury is a year and a half atleast to recover and with cpep being as big as he is would probably add another couple of months.

The fact still remains that any injury like theirs will never let them come back the same football players that they were...And its clearly evident.
