Any one notice Vernon?

Olivier Vernon is not a very good pass rusher. This should not really be news but for whatever reason a lot of people take a blind eye to what he's actually showing on the football field.

He's good for what he is. He's pretty athletic, and since his days at Miami he's had very powerful hands that allow him to play like a player bigger than his frame would suggest. This is why he's good for base downs, until Dion Jordan is ready to assume the 3-down role for which he was drafted.

But let's not pretend Olivier has a bright future in Miami. That fate was sealed the moment they drafted Dion Jordan all the way up at #3 overall. And if there was any ambiguity, they took that ambiguity away a few days ago by giving Koa Misi a four year contract extension.

Kevin Coyle does not agree with you on OV. He says that although it may not show up in stats, OV played a heck of a game verses the best LT in football. He says OV got constant pressure the entire game on the QB from his side, helping other players get the sacks they got. Here's the link and the time stamp is about 4:45 sec:

well, that might be how KC saw it, but it's not how bleacher report saw it...

OV is fine. He played well against joe thomas, people who can't see that either are blind, or were desperate for material to fill an article and meet a deadline.

I thought coyle had it right on the money. thanks for the link.

We will see next week how much OV has improved when Indy really focuses on stopping Cam Wake. Hopefully, he will be able to take advantage.

David Bowens is a Great Comparison!!! The one play he made last season against Cincinnati were Vernon was 20 yards down field in coverage and dove to break up a pass, convinced me he can do alot in this defense. He's athletic and strong at the point. I bet if given the chance Vernon would make one hell of an OLB!!! He's that determined and dedicated. I love that guy.

I was to busy watching ther guys to watch Vernon, but I do know that on one of the interceptions Ellerbe came on a blitz while Vernon opened up the lane for him.

Olivier is a stout player, he may not get a ton of sacks, but other guys are working off him, and it's not like he gets no push. I think he has a unique set of talents, can do a lot of things, but he's not a great pass rusher. Still not bad either.

How about this: Your subjective observations bear little resemblance to what actually, objectively transpired? lol

Yes, that describes it very nicely. The subjective description of Olivier Vernon looking like a "beast" in pass rush during the preseason bears little resemblance to what actually, objectively transpired. Thanks.

Yeah, Coyle was sure proud of him.

So proud of him they drafted his direct replacement at #3 overall and will be putting him on the bench as soon as they deem the young stud ready.

So following your logic CK, one of Soliai, Starks or Odrick is an NFL bench warmer?

To some extent, yes although the snap counts are much more important to me than anything else. As I've been saying, with Cameron Wake and Dion Jordan both destined to become 900+ snap guys on the defense, there's litle room for Olivier Vernon to be more than a 300 snap player. That player right now is Derrick Shelby, who is currently on pace for 336 snaps this season.

On the other hand, Jared Odrick is on pace for 976 snaps this season. Paul Soliai is on pace for 720 snaps and Randy Starks is on pace for 640 snaps.

That would make all of them at least twice as important as Olivier Vernon, if he ends up in Derrick Shelby's role while Dion Jordan assumes three-down duties (which he needs to eventually, in order to justify his draft status).

Hope that clears it up for you. But I have a feeling you were asking that question rhetorically and therefore won't actually listen to what I have to say on the matter.

On most NFL teams Vernon would play almost every defensive snap. Im sure there are a ton of teams who would gladly take him as a starter at DE.

If only I had been so lucky...

if this year odrick is on pace for 976, soliai 720 and starks is on pace for 640... than that must mean that 3 players can accumulate a minimum of 640 snaps in a season on a rotation..

is there a reason that three players of a different position, can't attain the same #? say a position like defensive end, especially if one of those defensive ends is versatile enough to drop into pass coverage whilst the other two rush the passer?
