More free agents considering Miami Dolphins

By Armando Salguero

PHOENIX -- It used to be the Dolphins really couldn’t compete in free agency when the prize was a veteran who wanted an opportunity to win right away. Places such as New England or Baltimore or Green Bay led the list of destination teams those older decorated players wanted to join to chase a championship.

Well, the Dolphins still aren’t fully in that company. But they’re closer than they’ve been in years.

The recent additions of Mike Wallace as well as other free agents, and the growing belief that perhaps Miami finally has a good quarterback on the roster, has made the team a viable option for players who would have skipped the chance in the past.

And that’s the reason the possibility of adding a gifted veteran such as Osi Umenyiora or Elvis Dumervil is real this offseason. Indeed, the club has spent considerable time studying Umenyiora and even called his representatives to explore the possibility.

He’s on the radar and blinking as much as any 31-year-old player with 26.5 sacks in the past three seasons can in a depressed veteran defensive end market.

The idea of getting Dumervil, a graduate of Miami Jackson, is not quite so far along. The Dolphins think he could be a fit, but there have been no calls and the former Denver Broncos player is not a front-burner issue at the moment.

But down the road, if Dumervil is still on the market, if his price tag is reasonable, and the need to help the pass-rush persists, then the Miami native might be a fit, the Dolphins believe.

Why wouldn't they consider Miami? Money, good weather, beaches and nightlife...Just because Peyton Manning is a farm boy doesn't mean Miami is not and will not always be an attractive destination. But in the end of the day, $$ talks

I wouldn't consider Miami right now because they haven't proved a thing in a long time. It is no fun to lose, even if the location and night light is great. Besides that, there have been no fans filling the seats. I would hate playing somewhere that was silent at home.

and that will change with winning.

Osi Umenyiora - DL - Giants
The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have spent "considerable time" studying free agent Osi Umenyiora and called his reps about the possibility of signing.
Umenyiora would make sense for the Fins because he's a right-side pass rusher and Cam Wake is most effective at left end. Per the Herald, fellow free agent Elvis Dumervil is not on the "front-burner" and the Dolphins have determined John Abraham is "not a fit" for them. Reporter Armando Salguero expects the Dolphins to use a draft pick or free-agent signing to supplement their pass rush. If they go the latter route, it sounds like Umenyiora would be the most likely target.

So you look at the past, not at the now and future?/...Glad your not my stock broker...If you follow the Fins, clearly we are making improvements and are on the rise. Also, I'm pretty sure living in Miami will affect some free agents.

I'm glad am not a stock broker. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I love what the team has been doing in Free Agency. I am just stating my opinion as to why a player might not put Miami at the top of his list. And honestly it's not like I exaggerating the the state of the teams recent seasons. I just hope everyone stays humble. We have seen countless times a team that goes all in during FA. Then the team ends up not living up to expectations. I just want to see improvement and give it at least till the following season before I start to worry again.

Just to piggy back off that^, Tannehill has showed us a lot of promise and he passes the "eye test", but if I'm a veteran free agent looking to win NOW he hasn't shown me enough (yet).

I am ok with Osi if the price is right and he passes a physical. He may have a couple more years left in the tank. I always thought his last name was Humanyura. :chuckle:

The number one factor is money. I mean Miami has a lot of nice things but nobody is coming here cheaper. Wallace signed for the money, Ellerbee signed for the money, Wheeler signed for the money.
One thing that was always false that FA's wouldnt come here well besides Peyton we will never know why he had no interest in us, maybe he didnt see us as contenders but money was still main factor

WOW!!! where have you been over the last 10 years?

EPIC FAIL!!!!

My bro being a Giants fan, I watched a lot of Osi over the last few years. He's a horrible run stopper, but even at his age I think he can contribute easily 8-10 sacks as a 3rd down pass rush specialist. I think it's clear that their interest in Osi and Elvis (sounds like it could be a sitcom), plus opting for two younger, faster lesser known LBs means Mia is preparing for life with possibly two rookie corners, or at least one rookie and a average journeyman like Carroll in order to take the pressure off of them and make QB release quickly.
