not alot said about this guy on any boards i frequent, but if season goes as i hope then he could really be a star....I hope season goes like this first, the offence dominate TOP and gets good leads in the turner style, this means our defence is better rested and is defending teams having to pass to 'comeback'....this will go up against our strength, our pass defence.....we have 2 shutdown cbs plus fletcher and T Buck(if signs) taking the nickel and dime responsibilities, this is backed by our 2 deep patrolling safeties who excell in pass coverage......This is why i think Freeman will have a huge season as our defence will be tested more in pass and from the times i saw him last season he showed great range and anticipation and the situation is just made for his skills......look at the way our pass defence is set up from a opposition coordinators point of view........does he throw at our 2 starting cbs who get mixed up safety help? probably not...so where does he look? the #3 and #4 cbs sound good, but this is why we got Fletcher as the #3 is a near starter position in NFL and in particular miami..it needs starter quality...similarily the #4cb becomes a target as teams look away from the top 3 positions, but T buck is a very experienced and able cb as well......to top this all 4 guys get a safety blanket of 2 very good rangy pass specialist safeties which allows for aggressive cb play......its not beyond reason Fletcher and T buck having big seasons as they can really go after plays, given all thats around them....Madison and Surtain will not probably have the opportunities as team go away from them......

obviously there is a cautionary note to this....our offence has to play its part and get the opposition both chasing games and having less tome to do it in........Also our DL is important in stopping the run and not letting teams dominate like late last year as both our lbs and this years undersized safeties will be exposed and wear down..........simple if our offence is as improved as we hope, our DL stuffs a run threat, then we will have some huge days on defence as teams have to be near perfect in pass to beat a very talented group.

our d should be much better this year...the defensive line should be improved with chester, burnett and gardener at de...dg is the wildcard,if he can stay healhy he may wreak havoc on opposing ols...i think arturo freeman will be fine stepping in for brian walker...the only problem that i have with our d is depth at linebacker...if one of our starters gets injured we could be in some trouble...i also think morlon greenwood will have a big year...remember he missed training camp and the first few games last year as a rookie...

Freeman will do fine in pass coverage, but I agree that a weak DL ag the run will hurt him and/or Brock as the season progresses. As much as I like Pat, I have not seen anyone avoid throwing at him, i.e. notice the ridiculous # of penalties; however, no one throws at Sam anymore.

I believe, this is my opinion only, that Pat is thrown due to his bad habit of causing the penalty. He isn't thrown at because he is the weak link, but because he will make the pass interference or holding call. Sam doesn't make those mistakes too often, which is why he is avoided all together.

he is not thrown at as much as Sam is thrown away from. I am hope that in pre-season Fletcher is constantly thrown at to see his worth.

Yes. QBs choose the lesser of two evils. And that means they throw at Surtain and the other teams best WRs lines up against Surtain.

What a luxury to have "Our weak link" be Pat :rocker:

when Fletch moves outside in nickel/dime packages and Pat moves inside, it will be interesting to see if a team like the Colts move Harrison outside to face Fletch or leave him in the slot to face Pat.

I cant agree about penalties ...they both have thier fair share ,but i remember a few that sam had that just killed us .Both these guys are Physical type coverage guys ,who unfortunatly are going to get penalties like this once in a while .My problem is that if they are so good why arent they left on the "island "more often and let the safteys come up for run support ...let these two EARN that MONEY!!Are you listening Jim Bates? ...last year teams ran allover us while the defense didnt adjust ,we got the two best cornerbacks out there and we need to let them do what they do best !.

Agreed badfoot. I think Brock should stay in pass support, and let the SS get up to the box more often. This defense is good, but it will only be great if it becomes less predictable......

I definetly agree with you there.. The Rams showed exactly how to exploit us..Thank God all teams don't have a MFaulk are we would be in some serious trouble.

there are 2 problems with that
1. Miami does not want its safety up against the run, they were really reluctant to do it even when we were being ran over at season end........the whole defence is based on the front seven stopping the run and the pass defence not giving up big plays...we do not quite plcover 2, the safeties tend to just play deep.
2 arturo freeman is a FS playing SS, he is no way built or skilled to be a full time run support safety

if our safeties are coming up in season it will mean our defence has been compromised....its not how we want or are suited to play with personnel we have got as starters..

You know the more I think about this..I seem to remember, the running didn't happen to us until DG was out and the back ups were hurt..basically, if our D line is healthy and Backups too...we didn't need the safeties to move up..but if the Dline is hurting, then we should start using different formations to stop the run game.

I remember reading that Dave is going to spend more time on the D side of the ball and working on playing more 8 man fronts.

Also read how Bates explained that after DG and the backups got hurt you just don't go to playing 8 in the box because it takes alot of practice to know who is going where and what everyone's reponsibilities are. This is the reason that they have begun praticing 8 man fronts during mini-camps.

I think this year the D will be mixing it up showing both 7 and 8 man looks. This will really mess with the the QBs head during the early part of the season as teams won't have film of the FINS D shifting from 7 to 8 men in the box.
