I know I will still get my NFL Sunday Ticket, but I have read that Huizenga is already kvetching about a slowdown in season-ticket renewals, and blaming the economy.

So when do we finally see a trend towards reducing of NFL salaries ? How is the NFL going to deal with a shrinking economy ?

I have canceled my Sunday Ticket and I now live out of the area and have not missed a game in years. My plan is to go to a local sports pub and watch all the games. I figure if I spend less than $15 each trip to the sports bar, then I come out ahead, plus I get to mingle with other Dolphin fans and talk about how excited we are about Sparano and company!

I would venture to guess that any team coming off a 1-15 season will see some decline in season tix renewals.
Plus the cost of attending ANY professional sporting event outpaces the usual cost of living increases.
Player salaries increase annually at a ridiculous pace and at some point you would think market forces would cause a plateau effect.

exactly

Yeah seriously I wish normal peoples salaries could rise at 10-20% a year like pro sports figures salaries do.

Besides when we hosted the superbowl, how many times have you seen Dolphins stadium packed..It's not the economy, it's the performance of the team..

Tampa Bay Bucs-Tickets sold out

brilliant post. I was wondering that myself. one solution is to reduce ticket prices and not pay rookies more then 400,000 dollars which is not really a factor here but a pay scale and ticket prices would something to ponder.
here is how my priorities would be if i was working a 25,000 a year job and wanted to view all this.
1. pay my bills first, and be a fan the best way i could.

2. if money allows then i would put sports on my things to do list.

3. paying rent, bills and eating and buying fuel is about all i could do during these times of inflation.

if I made over $30.000 a year then i might be ok to be a season ticket holder or at least atttend 4 games a season.

what hurts is not only the recession but the horible wins/loss reccord over the last six years is another factor.

The networks are the ones with the problems, not the NFL. They're locked into deals for the next three years and are facing declining ad revenue.

Slowing economy? are you kidding.... anyone know where I can find a Wii Fit without paying 5 times what it's worth? Or maybe a Wii console for that matter?

we wont see a decrease in salaries, well see an increase in tickets and other NFL products. These increase in prices will trickle down all the way even bottles of coke, anything with an NFL logo on it.

As long as we have DB owners like Al Davis and Arthur Blank throwing cash around, this will NEVER change

At what point does the economy affect the NFL?

Probably at the point that the economy stops growing, which hasn't occurred yet.

A recession is defined by two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. Since the recovery began from the last recession in Bush's first year in office, the US economy hasn't had a single quarter of negative growth - much less two.

The big buzz over the "terrible" economy is related mostly to three things.... the mortgage market scandal... much higher energy prices... and the fact that with a presidential election near where the Democrat isn't the incumbent - the media has been relentlessly negative with every story about the economy. I could go into detail about all three of those points... but this is a football discussion board. :)

Mike Florio ran a blurb on Huizinga's comments that the economy was affecting ticket sales for the Dolphins, and felt the need to make this observation:

Um, would that 1-15 season have anything to do with the decrease in the sales?

Uh, are you seriously modeling the entire state of an economy after scarcity of a video game?

As long as they're getting $8 a beer they'll be fine.

They'll probably put a 'fuel-surcharge' of $2 a beer to make of for any losses.
