Austin Jackson confident he can handle starting right tackle duties

He looked like an RT last year? I wouldnt even go as far to say decent or mediocre RT. He was constantly at the end of losing battles. The Falcons preseason game gave me a little bit of hope for him because I had never seen him do well against anyone. I dont need him to be perfect, just average at this point.
I mean zero disrespect, but he played like 80 offensive snaps at RT all of last year. The years previous he played at LT, then LG, and much of what you said was true. However, he got hurt in the 1st half of week 1 and went on IR. He came back, got hurt again that same game, and was done for the season. Prior to the injury he played well at RT all preseason and in the NE game before he got hurt.

Listen, Liam’s playing as good of football as he’s played. He’s had his bumps, and he’s gotten better from them in this camp, but there’s other good players. Those things have to be settled on the field, I believe. Those opportunities will continue, and then I’ll know when the team knows, and I’ll be able to feel it, not just by how that person plays but by how his teammates play around him…”

goodbye Eich

All great points but when is enough enough? If he gets injured this year does he get another pass? The guy has not really shown anything when on the field, lets hope that changes this year or he needs to be an afterthought.

If he gets injured this year I doubt he will even be on the team next year. They declined his 5th year option this past offseason so he will be a free agent after this season.

If AJ stays healthy, then we’re more than adequate at RT. Injuries for sure have curtailed his progression. He’s only 24 and scouts weren’t wrong saying he had a big ceiling coming out of USC so young at 21. Would love to see it come together for him this year!

we can only hope that he can stay healthy and play well.

I believe he will be solid this year if he remains healthy. However, what is plan B?

Some say that Jackson started out okay last year, but he got hurt and missed nearly the whole season. I understand that injuries happen, but Miami needs o-linemen that can play well AND stay on the field. Armstead can't stay on the field, but he has proven that he can play well when he is on the field. However, Jackson has yet to prove that he can play well for longer than a few snaps here and there.

So, what is Plan B? IMO, Grier doesn't have a Plan B, and I don't think he even cares. Why do I say this? Because when he signed Armstead last year, he knew that Terron had a history of missing games due to injuries, but he didn't bother to make sure that he had a COMPETENT LT to replace him when he was out. And, we all saw how bad the line was when Armstead was missing. What was even worse was that although it was bad enough that he failed to get a decent back-up for Armstead, he didn't even bother upgrading the RT position, which makes no sense considering that they have a left-handed QB. IOW, Grier spent money on a LT with a history of missing games when he should have signed a good RT to protect Tua's blindside. Then, he ignored getting a decent back-up for Armstead and signed a bunch of nobodies to back-up Jackson at RT.

Others may blame poor coaching for the o-line, but I put 100% of the blame on Grier. Why? We've all seen how the line has performed below average ever since Philbin was hired, and it continued under Gase. When Flores took over for 2019, Grier gutted the roster in order to rebuild. Between the 2020 and 2021 drafts, Grier had a total of ten 1st and 2nd round picks, plus later picks, along with a ton of space under the salary cap. So, with a huge number of resources available over a two year period, what did Grier do to put together an NFL caliber o-line to protect his young franchise QB? At the end of the 2021 season, Miami had the worst o-line in the league, and it was historically bad. That, IMO, proves that either Grier didn't care about the o-line, or he is inept when it comes to evaluating linemen and building a competent o-line. Now, for 2023, Miami still doesn't have a proven LT to fill in for Armstead, and they're still relying on Jackson to become a competent RT. Yet again, Grier is gambling that Armstead will stay healthy, Jackson will stay healthy AND improve a lot, and Eichenberg is STILL in the mix for the starting LG spot... WTF! While Grier has done some good things, Ross needs to hire someone else from outside to scout, evaluate, and build the o-line.

He will be working at a local burger joint if he is the reason Tua can't complete the season.
Depends with whom he is competing for the flip burgers spot.
He might be depth there as well.

Stop moving his ass around and give him time to get healthy. We we neither since he’s been in Miami. I think he’s gonna surprise people.
I would like you to be correct.
But my guess is he ranks bottom few RTs in PFF grades.

2021 was the worst total offense i`ve seen on this team in a long time not just o-line . That was totally on the coaching , Flores new crap about how a offense should work and refused to higher anyone that could possibly no a little more about football then himself .

If Jackson and Igbinoghenne have decent 2023 seasons, they could get some interest around the league as lower tiered young free agents with starting experience. That could result in some decent 2025 comp picks for Miami. They might also get a good 2025 comp pick if they lose Sieler next off season too.

I haven’t found McD to use hyperbole very often. If he says that Jax is playing well then I trust him.
I think McDaniel is the opposite of Flores. He teaches by positive reward, saying positive things rather than belittling, doesnt public criticize, etc.
All great things and even more accented as the players were used to Flores.

I’m not trying to be a wise guy but I’m not sure I buy the narrative that AJ was playing good before injuries. First of all, he only played for like a minute last year.

What we have seen of him over the years is a guy that when on the field, is inconsistent at best. And by inconsistent I don’t mean a good name and a bad game. More like a good play and then a bad play - which to me equates to to more like a backup player.

He’s young, he’s missed a lot of time and therefore playing experience so hopefully he can stay healthy and grow this season.
