Barry Jackson: Dolphin Tidbits

They just gave $61 million in contracts to Dannell Ellerbe and Phil Wheeler. Even if the Dolphins move to more of a 3-4, how do you get 5 linebackers on the field in a 3-4 defense? Lest we forget about Cameron Wake.

Signing Ellerbe and Wheeler were before getting Jordan, which no thought would ever happen. I see Misi as the better inside option over Wheeler in a 3-4, and part of a rotation which will be confusing to OC's. He will not be expensive, and has a lot to offer. JMO

$13 million is an awful big "oops". You're essentially saying the cost of trading up for Dion Jordan was the #12 pick in the draft, the #42 pick in the draft, the $7.24 million difference between the guaranteed money you pay the #3 pick versus the #12 and #42 picks combined, AND $13 million of guaranteed money you gave Phil Wheeler that has now been rendered useless.

Not saying useless but, not sure we would have signed Wheeler after the draft. Coyle has many new toys to play with. How he will mix and match is anyone's guess.

Would you keep Misi and, if so, how would you use him?

Well I wouldn't have traded up for Dion Jordan so you've already got me at a little bit of a loss.

What's done is done, and now it's a matter of dealing with it. IF all the players on the front 7 play as many anticipate, playing time is gonna be at a premium, and will have to be earned. Not a bad problem to have.

Not a bad problem to have. Provided you haven't spent so much in resources in this area that you've neglected other areas.

Koa Misi was a standout performer on the defense last year believe it or not. But the praise from the coaches would seem to imply they're at least thinking of keeping him around longer term, which would have some interesting implications toward how they think about Dion Jordan.

I think they pretty much see Jordan as a DE. Jordan seems to see himself that way, too. The pass coverage and general linebacker stuff seems like extra to him. Not a part of the main job, in other words, which he defines as getting after the quarterback. What'll be interesting is when Starks gets back, which will probably be before Jordan is signed/back from injury. Does Odrick go back to end or does he stay in the DT rotation? If it's back to end, then they might see Jordan's role more as a third down specialist as a rookie, ala Aldon Smith.

Odrick needs permanent move to DT. I think he is strong enough to hold up against run and he has a special quick burst to get to QB from inside.

wow, koa misi is king now. who da thunk it?

The Koa thing is very weird as I see Jordan as a prototypical SAM linebacker, but this would show the team doesn't care about his pass coverage in our base defense. I think he is primarily the Vernon position in nickel as the right DE/linebacker which we play around with for different blitzes in his first year. The other thing we do that is kind of odd, is we designate strong and weak side by number of receivers, not the tight end side and we also put our will on the strong side when we are over shifted. Both of those are things you see from the Kiffin coaching tree because it allows you to match up your best cover linebacker on their better receiving threats. This is why Misi doesn't cover tight ends. His job is either deal with the tight end on the line and blitz/drop into short zone. Or cover the back out of the back field.

We have so many options on the defensive front, it's a little confusing to think of all the possibilities. The coaching staff must love and hate that. :chuckle:

I think you will see alot of versatile fronts, maybe even with lots of guys standing up, and the pre snap read will be impossible even for the likes of Manning or Brady to know who is coming. Jordan, Wake, Misi, Ellerbe, Vernon, heck even Odrick. Lots of versatility.

I can't see Jordan at DE this year other than passing downs. He needs to get bigger and stronger and that's not gonna happen in a limited off season due to recovering from injury. For future, I think that if he bulked up to be a true 3 down DE, he loses some speed and cover skills, which IMO diminishes some value to the team.

Agree that his main job is to get after the QB but, believe he can do that better as a Joker, while adding coverage on top.
